Can you get a 300 H&H to feed/fit in a Savage long action? I would be interested to build one someday for my dad.

Never had one, but from what I've read here, there was a special action Savage used. I might be wrong though.

An alternative might be the 300 Ruger Compact Magnum. It's made for the standard long action, and puts out 300 H&H power in a shorter barrel.

Actually the RCM is a short action round but you could put it in a long action if you wanted to. The H&H is a bit long but you can do some cutting/tweaking to the magazine to make it fit. Otherwise it would be a single shot. If you can find a Savage RUM action it would fit in it or one of the 375 H&H's that Savage made once upon a time. The actions are basically the same except they have a longer magazine cutout in the bottom with the longer magazine to accommodate the longer cartridges.

When Savage produced the 7MM STW they milled down the feed ramp on the receiver so that it would accommodate the long round. The magazine remained as that used for the 300 WM. A 300 H&H is a great idea for a great old cartridge.

You're right about the feed ramp but they also did have to lengthen the magazine box. I have a 300 win mag on the old style flat rear receiver the I assure you the box is not long enough to fit an STW loaded round in to.

You are right. The Savage 7MM STW I had was a 114 Ultra and the magazine was indeed longer.
