View Full Version : I got my first rifle build basically 'sorted out' ....

Big thanks to all who helped get the new rifle sorted out. It was my first build and I learned a lot. I still need to bed the action, but at this point the rifle is shooting far better than when I first assembled it.

For those who didn't follow my "problems with new rifle build" thread, here are the components:

Savage Target Repeater Action (from donor LRP I bought from Jim/Northland)
SS barrel nut and lug from Northland
260 Rem
McGowen SS Shilen LV7 profile barrel, 1:8 twist, 24", threaded, thread cap
Manners MCS-T5 (dead flat black) stock
Harris S-BRM 6-9" bipod
EGW 20MOA HD scope mount
Burris Extreme Tactical 30mm low rings
SWFA 12x42 mil-quad scope
SSS 9 rd mags
Southern Ordnance Tactical bolt handle

It took about a month of incremental fixes/improvements but at this point the hardware and load are 'good enough' for me to have confidence to start using the new rifle to shoot with the local long range field/match group (600-1000 yds).

The current load is 42.6gr RL-17, A-Max 140 @2.855", CCI #200 primer, Lapua 260 Rem brass.

The two 5 shot groups I chronoed this morning:

Group #1 (includes CBS): Avg=2887fps, ES=13.8, SD=6.1
Group #2: Avg=2865 fps, ES=21, SD=8.7

All shooting was done with a bipod, rear bag, wooden bench, and other shooters bouncing the bench. :o

Cold Bore Shot (CBS) on left, middle group is 4 rounds without changing scope dials (in order to see how CBS compares to warmer barrel).

My goal for the rifle is to consistently shoot 1/2-3/4 MOA. Our long range field match club normally uses 1 MOA and larger sized target with an occasional .6 and .8 MOA targets (6" and 8" plates at 1000yds). Here is the 5 shot group at 300 meters. Not great, but good enough for now.

I also shot my LRP 260 Rem to verify it is still reasonably zeroed. As can be seen by the previous target and this one I did not account for the slight cross wind at 300 meters.

These photos were taken before I removed the muzzle brake and installed the thread cap.

Looks great. How long did it take to get that stock?

It was in stock at Stockys so it took 1 day for it to be delivered from the time it was ordered. I like this stock so much I'm now waiting for a second Manners T5. :)

Now I see them there. Didn't realize they had them.

What spacing is that action?

The target repeater action has a 4.4" spacing

VERY sweet rifle AND likewise your shooting! I'm looking forward (I think) to shooting 300 yards. No readily available range access...yet.

Question- what are you using to get the overlays on the targets? Is that a computer program? I'm working up load developments for my .223 and I like the way the shots are triangulated and the info. is right there. Beats heck out of my chicken scrawl...looks very professional.

Again- great gun and great shooting! Brian

The software I use for target analysis is OnTarget (http://www.ontargetshooting.com/). I just started using it and it's very easy.

Here's a photo of the current rifle configuration from this morning at the range. It was nice being the only person shooting on the rifle range.

100 Yd target (Cold Bore Shot, 5 shot group without zeroing scope, another 5 shot group after zeroing scope)

It looks like the cold bore shot is less than .1 mil high elevation, same windage as the warmed up barrel. Nice.

300 meter target.

Nice rig Wolf, and the temp is finally getting right for that Fla shooting. How do you like the SWAFA scope? Can you give an evaluation of the clarity. I have read mainly good reviews, with only a few marginal ones.

I don't have any real experience with more expensive scopes so I have no basis for comparison. I have gone out of my way to NOT look through the very expensive glass that everyone else in the long range shooting club uses (Nightforce, S&B, Premier, Swarovski, US optics, etc) because I do not want to know what I am missing. :sorrow: I know that I shoot just as well as the other guys at 600-1000 yds and that's good enough for me.

I shoot at the Volusia Gun & Hunt Club (http://www.volusiacountygunandhuntclub.com/) range which is just north of SR44 a couple miles west of SR415.

They have 100yd, 200m, 300m rifle ranges and the long range group uses the adjacent property for long range practice/matches (up to 1100 yds).

I did a quick test this morning to confirm zero and velocity of the current 'load' in preparation for a long range 'fun shoot' scheduled for tomorrow afternoon.

RL-17 42.8gr
A-Max 140 @2.855"
CCI #200 primers

Avg velocity = 2889 fps,
ES = 27 fps,
SD = 9.85

I'm seeing slightly flattened primers, but otherwise I'm loving the way this load is shooting!

Love that rifle wolf!

Do you want my address so I can take care of it for you?
