Alright thought I'd share on how I made my stencils when I painted my gun digital camo. I'll try to make it fairly easy to understand.
Materials need:
Wax paper
Painters tape 2-3inches wide(3inch is better)
Razor blade or xacto knife
Fine grade sand paper
Cutting board
Spray paint(rustoleum works really well) 3 to 4 colors of your choice. For the best look use colors that are similar to each other like I used khaki, nutmeg, and a dark brown. They're all different shades of each other. You could use light green, green, and a dark forest green
THIS IS ONLY FOR THE STOCK if you are going to paint the metal(barrel, receiver, ect.) I wouldn't use this and just use duracoat
(spray paint not show)

STEP 1:Cut a decent size sheet of wax paper, then begin to cut stripes of painters tape and lay them on the wax paper try not to have any bubbles

STEP 2: Flip over and repeat step one

STEP 3: Begin the cutting, be careful and be creative with this and think of your own design or you can go on google and search digital camo and try and do some of the ones on there. Also try and make the cuts as straight as possible.

STEP 4: Remove cut stencil

STEP 5: Get another sheet of wax paper and take the stencils you cut out and slowly peel off the tape from both sides, then apply the tape to the new sheet of wax paper. You will get 2 stencils for each one you cut out

STEP 6: Painting begins! Begin by taking the gun apart so you are left with the stock. Use the sand paper and lightly go over the stock this will create a better surface for the paint. Then take the LIGHTEST color and apply to the stock follow the instructions on the can(drying time for each coat and how to apply) Then once it is fully dried(recommend waiting 24 hours) apply your first layer of stencils.

STEP 7: Use as many as you want because wherever you put the stencils that's where the lightest color will show up in the end. The picture isn't the best but hopefully you can understand it. DO NOT REMOVE UNTIL VERY END

STEP 8: Spray second coat of paint(medium color one) do not apply on too thick. Then allow to dry for 24 hours

STEP 9: Apply second layer of stencils after paint has dried

STEP 10: Spray on the third color of paint(darkest one) then let dry for 24 hours.

STEP 11: Remove all stencils and apply a clear coat(I used rustoleums matte clear) it will help protect the paint

STEP 12: Reassemble your gun and you will have a custom paint job

Hopefully this helps anyone looking to paint a gun. If you have any questions just ask!

Very nice tutorial. Thanks a bunch for putting it together and sharing. The stock looks good! I noticed that on your cardboard mock-up that the digital pattern on the stock butt looks like the initials "FH". I don't know if that was intentional or not but it is an idea that could be used to incorporate your initials into the digital pattern and personalize the rifle.

EDIT::: Okay, I have been inspired! I have a "Frankenrifle" that I have put together in .270 and was wanting to do something with the stock. Thought about buying a new one but I have to try this first. I took the rifle apart already and started the process. I masked off the checkering pattern and the Indian head grip cap so that they are preserved and the rest will be digital. And I think I will sneak my initials into the pattern somewhere.

Nice thanks!! There is a hexagon pattern that I saw from a coating place in midland TX that I want to do bad! I think I'm going to have the sticker shop make the stencils for me.

Thank you I'm glad you liked it and hopefully it helps you when you do yours. And now that you mention it I do see the FH there and that would be a great idea to put your initials into the design. When you get yours done post some pics I'd like to see how it turned out. Good luck!

You're welcome glad it helped. Kind of like a honey comb pattern?? If so that would look really cool. If you end up doing post some pictures of the finished product I'd like to see how it looks
