If I were you I would do the 243AI for now. Buy another action later and then start on your 6mm-284 or 6.5-284(my personal favorite that I will be hopefully starting on soon as I finish the current rifle build). Be careful though. Savage's make it all too easy to build a crap load of great shooting rifles vs the other brands, as there is so much that the gun owner can do themselves, without the need of a gunsmith.

I just did a similar build I have a 243AI 1-8" twist in a Brux Barrel, S.S.S. Bolt handle/Lug,Timney trigger,Boyds Varminter stock. S.S.S. did the barrel as a .243. Then I had Kevin Cram at MCR ream it to a AI and do the Pillars and bed the stock along with a lift kit install. Should be fireforming some brass Saturday and some load work Sunday.

Ditto the above mention of the 6mm Super LR, just a thought of something other than a straight 243, better than the 243AI as there is no fireforming and all you do is run (size) standard new 243 Win. brass through the 6mm Super LR sizer die and your ready to load (dies available from Redding). It is basically a 1/10th inch longer 6XC. Same case capacity as a standard 243 and pushes the 115 DTAC at about 3000-3100. Very tempting for my next 6mm barrel.

Just a std 243 and RL17 (and GOOD brass) *should* be able get you to 3300 no problem with 105-108's.

RL17 seems to the magical fairy godmother of velocity for those size cartridges regardless of bullet weight.

6CM, H1000 mild load 3152 fps, 115 DTAC, great barrel life , excellant accuracy.

AI would be the easiest if you want to stay in the 6mm area. load it and shoot it. eject the newly formed case.
there are also a couple guys that are playing with 270 bullets in the .308 case.

factory rounds on this case are
.243 6mm
.260 6.5mm
7mm 08
.308

anything in between has been made. just pick

How about a .257-308? It's mearly a .243 necked up tp .257. You can get really wicked and make it an AI too.
