Got the chance to go Saturday morning to the range. After boresighting and a "test shot", I ended up with this group out of my first mag. Fine-tuning to come as I get some more range time with it. Not bad IMO...turned a 3" group into a 1" group after my mods...VERY PLEASED. WOULD LIKE SOME OPINIONS ON MY LOAD...ANY SUGGESTIONS?

.308 WIN

44g H-Varget
Lee Dipper 3.1cc
147gr FMS SBT
O.A.L. 2800
Velocity: 2773fps

I bought a...hmmm...errrrr...ok....I got a Wby S2 recently (couldn't get a 25-06 24" barrel in Savage) and I wanted to put on a one-piece Leupold base but couldn't get one. So, I put on the (cheap) two piece Weaver base. Do you guys think the "cheap" bases could be a problem for accuracy? Used Burris rings and a 4200 Elite Bushnell scope.

Even "cheap" stuff will work for a time when installed properly.

IMO - Blue Loctite when mounting 1-piece ring base...BUT LEVEL IT AND LEVEL IT AND LEVEL IT AGAIN. Making sure your centers of axis are all aligned and parallel is a must.

Shock - Am I reading this right? You're measuring with a dipper & not a scale?

You & Dean will get along great.... (fill case, tap on bench for 30 seconds, top off case again, drive bullet in using the bench vise)

Nice shooting , by the way. You're off to a good start.

To be honest FGW I am not the one doing the loading...I am still in the process of learning the trade. A good friend of mine and his father do the loading and I purchase from them (also give them my brass to cut costs). I have shadowed them a few times. I just started using handloads a few months ago. I am the very defintion of "handloading newb".

Appreciate the compliment. I've hunted all my life, but nothing over 100-150 yds. Long range shooting with medium-large caliber rounds is new to me. I suppose a thanks to my father for developing my core skills. The basic principles apply to all scenarios I suppose.

Also FGW..the dipper line you are refering to may be the primer...???? Unsure, this was the info I was given in my shell box.

I understand I didn't subtract the caliber dimension, but I have this weird qwerk about the group size being that of the diameter of the outer most points of impacts. I guess it's my way of telling myself that based opon the number of shells fired, they fit into this space. Overall spread diameter for simplicity....

dont be hasty to laugh at the dippers. lee makes a set of i think about 14 of them.
i watched a friend charge about 30 338 ultramag cases faster than i would have thought possible.
he used a spoon a trickler and a scale. im so impressed im thinking of using that system on some of my
larger cases where my measure isnt capable using just one cycle.

I know guys that use the dipper method. A lot of them are happy with the results.
I prefer to take my reloading OCD to the max. I have to use a scale & measure to the 1/10 or a gr. Of course, you'll understand better once you start to reload & develop your own OCD for which there's no medication or known cure.

Good shooting just the same. Whatever the weight in that dipper, its got to be close to the sweet spot.

Okay, what did i miss??? How did this go from scope bases to reloading??
