I just bought subject 99A. All I do is not too serious target shooting out to about 100 yards (no scope) but would like to shoot whatever grain bullet best suits the 99A barrel twist. I reload to about mid range pressures. Any recommendations on bullet weight? I have been shooting Sierra "Game King" in my .300 Savage and it seems okay (for whatever that is worth).

Hi Jim,

Think your 99 243 has a 1 in 10 twist barrel. Sierra makes a couple Game King bullets that should work in it.

I just built a Stevens 243 with a slightly different twist and started with the Sierra GK 1530. It's a 85 grain BTHP. During my research, this bullet was recommended more than most. Sierra also has a couple 100 grain bullets that might work well, the Pro Hunter 1540 and the GK 1560. Also heard good things about the Hornady VMax bullets.

You might have trouble stabilizing the longer bullets that are over 100 grains.

Good luck,
Dana

I shoot Rem Core Lokts 80 gr in a 243 of another brand. They are accurate and Im working up some loads for the 100 gr bullets of the same maker.

243s are 1 in 10 twist. That is how they beat the 244 that was made about the same time. 244 was 1 in 12 for varmit bullets. It was reintroduced later as the 244 mag as a 1 in 9 twist.

Thanks. I would like to know what your final recommendation would be for the 100 GR bullets.
