Refinished my new 110e and amazing grain came out.

So I was at the pawn shop looking for a rifle for deer season coming up and all the guns are on a carousel. So I was spinning the guns and some ugly colored stock caught my eye because it looked holographic. I grabbed it and it was a 110e in .270 which was exactly what I was wanting(but not so ugly) The price was right at only $245 so I grabbed it up took it home and started to refinish it the next day.

Nice ugly stock with a few chips(but not to the wood) No dents either!

After a bit of sanding I'm down to the wood. Does anyone know what type of wood this is? Sn begins with "E"

Put a nice coat of Mahogany stain on it

I didn't have much lacquer thinner so I had to use a brush to put it on instead of the paint gun I usually use so there was some wet sanding

Looks amazing out in the sun. In real life it looks more holographic. Only a few weeks and I can buff it to a glass finish. I tend to buy, sell and trade everything including guns but there are a few of them I won't sell. I think this will be one that gets passed down to my oldest son in a few years

I'd highly doubt it's birch as very rarely has birch every been used for gunstocks (Ruger 10/22 stocks are the only ones I can think of that use a birch stock these days, though maybe some of the Marlin leverguns have birch as well). Birch was widely used on older military rifles (1903 Springfield, M1 Garand, etc.) due to it's being plentiful and cheap.

Most likely it's maple which over the years Savage has used extensively with a stained oak-looking finish, and for a short time with a natural (blonde) finish. Even today's Model 11/111G models still use the tried and true stained maple stocks.

That type of figuring is called "quilted", though some will mistakenly call it "curly" which is a little different. Curly maple has the veins much closer together and is more consistent in it's pattern whereas quilted has wider veins and tends to be more random. Here's my curly maple rimfire stock as an example.

+1on maple. The pattern is tiger maple and also called flame or curly. It was highly favoured by early pioneer rifleman and as a result often seen in Kentucky style rifles. My experience is that it works as easy as regular maple. You definately got lucky there as that stock is not common to say the least. Don't be concerned about any affect on durability or stability as the stripes do not impact the grain of the wood.
