I have a couple boxes of 105gr vlds and my rifle is a savage 114 with 1:9.25 rate of twist. Berger recommends 1:8 or faster, yet I've read accounts of excellent results with the slower barrels. Has anyone tried this combo?

I have had great success with the hornady 105 Amax out of my savage but I have never tried the bergers. They may work OK you will just have to try them. I'm going to guess that they are a bit longer than the Amax so it might be an issue.

You will be fine as long as you send them 3000 Fps which is not a stretch, I have a 12 twist and still can make them work although it is an AI version but I have to send them at least 3300 fps to get them to cooperate.

Thanks, I just needed a little encouragement.

I think the Berger bullet is a little longer than the amax. but then I double checked the box, and I've got the "target BT 105gr." Sounds good and it's kind of wicked looking. 3000ish is at the upper end--exactly where I want to be.

What do you have powder wise.

I've got several to choose from. I'm thinking H4831sc. IMR4350 and IMR4064, too. there are some others too. Any recommendations?

Probly slower the better for that bullet. H4831sc should work well.

42gr of H4831 should get you there to 3000FPS, and I am sure you will be able to go higher with out seeing any signs of pressure, since it is such a slow burning powder, it will let you know way in advance, there's trouble down the line.

quick update:

I found some Berger 87gr VLD hunting bullets, loaded a few following Berger's coal procedure, and got to try them out this afternoon. What a difference the coal makes!

Best results 0.010" jammed: 3 of 4 in one ragged hole (0.42"); 4th shot pulled but still under 1":
0.010" off the lands: awful 3";
0.020" off lands: 3 of 4 under 1"; 4th opened up to 1.6".

All loaded with 37.1 gr IMR 4064, Win brass, CCI primers. Note this a max load. This is the first time I've loaded a 'jammed' load. Gonna load up a bunch for the next time out.

I love jammed in my bench rifles but shy away from it in my Savage 243 sporter for obvious reasons.

My model 10 predator hunter loves them with hv100.

My sporter is my bench rifle(!) I really don't do much hunting these days, and if I do, I like my 30-30 lever gun. Maybe if I get the chance for long range coyotes or groundhogs, it's good to have this load. I still have to load another batch to see if the first round results hold true.

Speaking of bench guns, I have ruger varmint model in 220 swift that I've been working on. I going to have to working up a jammed load for that rifle.
