I would love to see a thread dedicated to the "classic" American Hunting rifle. We have a thread dedicated to the tactical guns and to be honest those seem to dominate the Savage builds and I admit I have put that style together many times. I am putting together a "pretty" rifle and would love to see pics of yours. Pics, details, and game you use it on would be great. Anything from the American Classic's to custom, highly figured wood stocks and laminates. Lets see those "pretty" rifles!

Not exactly a highly figured beauty but here's a classic style budget build I did with a model 11GL in .243. The white line spacers are made from a plastic sheetrock mud bucket. the ebony fore end is ebony stain with white automotive pinstripe to cover the small amount of bleeding from the stain. The stain color is Golden Oak and the whole thing has several nice coats of minwax satin poly over it. Not bad for a cheap birch stock. Of course it's bedded with a nicely adjusted 3 screw trigger. American classic styling on a tight budget. (Cost of poly, stain and pinstripe) if I remember right about $15-$20 and hey it was fun.
I still have this stock but the rifle has been converted into a synthetic DBM .308 16"" carbine since this pic

It's not a true classic, but here's my 116 American Classic 30-06. Didn't like the lack of definition in the finish, as the piece of walnut Savage put on this rifle was very nice, so I stripped it, added an ebony grip and forend cap, and hand rubbed the finish. Turned out pretty nifty I think.

It's not a true classic

Looks like one to me. I like it. I took a 114 American Classic stock and removed all the finish....that was a job I don't want to do over....and did a Danish oil finish. Looks very much like yours. The most accurate hunting rifle I have ever had. 7MM Magnum of course!

Sinman,
gorgeous rifles, all of them. I had a custom Mauser 25-06 that was a pawn shop find myself with the prettiest grain you have seen. Should have never gotten rid of that rifle. The only reason I did is that I was offered almost 4x's what I paid for it. That ammo box is something else!

Vol,
Not a classic? Have you lost your mind?!?!?! Nifty indeed!

I guess when I think classic, I think of older guns. But you are right, that it is a classic model.

This is a great thread! I'll add my input to it with my 110e that I am waiting to finish curing so I can polish it to a mirror shine. I'll post a finished product soon

Futurerider,
I saw your thread the other day and it reminded me that I had an older 114 stock laying around, so I took it outside and could barely see some figure beneath the brown factory "paint". I stripped it down on Saturday and spent the day and Sunday refinishing it. I will try to get some pics of it up tonight. Not as impressive as yours, but the figure hiding beneath is really pretty.

very nice. I wonder how many of these old rifles never got the proper recognition for their hiding beauty. Can't wait to see some pics

I had posted this picture on another thread and was asked to put it on here. I hope no one gets tired of looking at it. This is one I put together for my oldest Son. It also shoots pretty good and seems like it likes 140gr Bergers

^^ Man, that is a beautiful rifle. I should've never gotten rid of that barrel! The grain on the stock is amazing. I wish I could find one like that. Is that a 114 American Classic?
