Have to savage 6.5 284 in savage one F-class the other 111 longrange hunter. Have older 65-284 win action post 70 1/9 twist. I get 1/2 to 5/8 groups at 3250 120 gr spt. In older mod 70 with 57 gr. old 3100 powder just stats to flatten primer on 90 degree days no problems with this gun. I wanted to shoot out too 600 yards so I bought the long range hunter with 26 in barrel hoping to reach 2950 to 3000 fps woth 140 vlds no deal at about 2850 to 2880 I show stiff bolt lift. and on a 15degree raise in temp leaves ejector mark. HSM with 140 vld 2850 good load. I have tried 4831sc 4350 rel17 hybrd 100 magpro and some real old bulk 4831. Some differences but still pressure issue.
This Gun reaches pressure about 2gr. before most powder data. also some vertical stinging. I shot one Norma factory round and it blew primer out and weakened my ejector. The neck is a little tighter than my f- class so in tried outside neck ream also I use comp redding bushing and seating dies. The back of this guns locking lugs also looks pitted and rough. Looking for Ideas on what the problem is. Am I expecting to much? I can get better vel with my older win model 70 with 24 inch barrel.

Robert I have a savage 12 F-class in 6.5-284 with a 30 in bbl My load is lapua brass cci br2 primers sierra 142 mk with hybrid 100. 51 gr gives me 3100 fps with no pressure signs. 53 gr gave me 3250 fps but to much pressure very heavy bolt lift and stretched the primer pockets. my thoughts a rough throat or a rough barrel. if you have a bore scope check for roughness. if it is rough try some of Tubbs coated bullets . He has a couple bore maintenance options. we have had very good results to fantastic results. I hope this help

I hope this helpThat's real close to what my F-class shoots with hybrid I started bolt feel at 50gr. took it to 52gr. still hard bolt feel but no ejector mark I back off to 49.5 3025 to 3040. 5/8 5shot group common. My most accurate load was mild 142smk imr4350 41.3gr. 2700 fps I shoot this load to practice at 600yds this gun shoots good never much over 1 inch with anything I tried. I think your right about the barrel and neck on my other gun thanks for your input and load data. I found the smk easier to get good groups but wanted to shoot vld for hunting read good thing about their performance on game as long as vel is above 2000fps at the animal. I'll try to see if there is a gun smith here with bore scope. I think I'll give the tubb bullets a try don't think I could hurt much if it don't settle in I'll have a new barrel put on any way or sell the Gun and start over. Still going to be 6-5 284 though been shooting this since about 1984 it does its job all right.

Joe thanks for the tip I have not tried Retumbo I tried magpro and got pretty good results over 2900 with just flattening the primer Next time i See retumbo on the shelve I'm going to give it a try. Are you shooting the long range hunter or one of the other 6-5 284 norma rifels.
