Gents,
I'm new to long-range competition shooting. For F-Class (FTR) shooting, are there any shooters using the venerable .30-06? It is a little kinder to the shoulder over the .300 Win Mag.
Thanks.

A lot of guys on here use .223 once I get a little more settled I'm looking to use my .308. As long as it reaches consistently for you it should work.

I thought FTR was 223 and 308 only

Open f class is anything. Seems like the 300wsm is really shining there.

I think the restrictions are to the Palma COF

This is correct. F/TR is .223 or .308. F Open is anything goes.

FT/R only .308/.223, 7mm SAUM, 284 win, 6.5-284 seem to be popular in F-Open

I have been wanting to go shoot a F/TR match but it has been challenging to find some matches locally.

I don't think there are any local matches, I think the closest ones are several hours away.

FTR is a subclass of FClass. Find an F Class match there probably will be enough interest in doing the FTR sub. With the match director's blessings of course.

I think most would recommend the .308 for Long Range F-TR which is 800 to 1000 yards. The .223 will work for Mid Range F-TR, 300 to 600 yards. Not many of the F-TR shooters I've seen use .223 even for mid range but the mid range matches I've been to were 600 yards.

Competing in F-Class match involves traveling for many of us, the closest club to me that has sanctioned matches is 140 miles. I've driven three times that distance to shoot 1000 yard matches.

For you guys in North Texas looking for a place to shoot there are some who come up to Oklahoma City Gun Club. OCGC has monthly 600 yard F-Class matches, the next one is September 21.

Yep, about the only time you'll see .223s is on reduced courses, 200 & 300 yards.

I shoot a 223 at 600 yd matches I go to and I always see one or two others but, it's different everywhere you go I suppose. At the last match (2 strings at 300, 2 at 600 yds) there was a high master shooting a 223, normally he shoots a 308. With his 223 he dropped 11 points in four 20 shot strings. In One string he only dropped one point. The string he dropped the most points in (5) was at 300, go figure lol. The reason I switched to a 223 is recoil and cost.

Because recoil causes me problems with my 308 I switched and I seem to shoot my 223 better than my 308 but, yes the 308 does have an advantage. Just my .02 cents

I think all F class should be 223 or 308 like it was designed to be...Make it a more equal match...My opinion only....Too many wild cat calibers in to it now....
