260 rem vs. 7mm-08 vs. 280 rem. Which of the 3 makes the best caliber for whitetail deer?

280 should have more power then a 7 -o8. hard to beat a 6.5 bullet though.
.30-30 still probably holds the record for most kills.
In the end, your the only one to care, the deer is dead.

Any of the three are more than enough for Whitetail at any reasonable range.

I like the 7/08 BUT it's not better then the 280! They are equal except that the 280 will hold more powder. I don't think that's an advantage, but some might disagree. My 7/08 shoots 140TSX's over H414 in a 24" barrel Rem700 at 3050fps. I had the 7/08 and can make great brass from 308 Lapua brass so that was easy. If I had a 280 then I would have gone that way. The 260 is great but you can't get into the heavy bullets, not like you would need them for deer anyway.

Quite honestly it doesn't make an ounce of difference on Whitetail.
My personal vote is the 260. Their sectional density can take those bullets deeper than most all else.

Give me a .260 in a 26" barrel for hunting. Bench work I would go with a 28" or 30" barrel with a heavier contour. Great round with limited recoil. Really shines at long distance too.

243 is a killing machine and deer do not take at lot to bring them down. Data however on the cartridges given does not show any equality between the 260 and the 280.

Choice most times is based upon circumstances only the user can determine.
1. recoil?
2. Range?
3. Will the cartridge be used on larger game?

For whitetail deer all will do fine and the deer won't know the difference. The 280 should do about 200 fps more than the others with similar weight bullets at similar pressures and should handle heavier bullets ( not needed for deer) better. I see some pretty big claims for the 7mm-08 on the internet and while I don't doubt they may be true, I am 99% sure there are some pretty high pressures involved. Having said all of that I would probably go with the 7mm-08 , 260 and 280 in that order, because I like short action rifles. I might opt for the 260 first as I tend to like to be the odd man out when it comes to rifles. Just my .02
