Loading for .243win and need some help

I know that this isn't a savage but figured I would try to soak up some of your knowledge here while I wait for parts on my 12fv. I have had my Ruger No.1 for a while now and have had a brutal time finding a load for it. I tried some stuff with 105 A-max's and no luck and finally think I am making some headway. My most common problem is it throwing 1 bullet horizontally every 3rd shot or so. (Have have been shooting No.1's for a while and know they are a pain in the butt and have done lots to get this thing to shoot as well as it is). Today I loaded some 90gr. Nosler BT's with 39.5gr of IMR4350 (3" vertical string) and then another with the same bullet and 40.5gr of IMR4350 with progress (1.7" with a flyer). I then loaded one more load with the same bullet and 40.2gr of IMR4350 and got the best overall group (.947"). What do you guys think is my next step for this load? I am thinking about going .1-.2 over and under the 40.2gr load and maybe finding the sweet spot.

Hi. What twist is the #1?
I have a Rem 700 Varmint Special, I bought years ago (new) 1:9.5 twist. It hates anything over 80 grs... Strange.
Once I started with 70 gr hpbt, it shoots one hole groups. I realize that light bullets might not suit your purpose.... Just a thought.
My 243 Axis also likes the light bullets and honestly, I haven't tried any 85 and up bullets in it. These are just used as varmint rifles. Although I don't hunt deer anymore, I have a couple of 7-08s and 30-06 for that job, if I choose.....

the twist is 1:9". I may try doing some testing on smaller bullets thanks!

look-up your bullet and input the particulars about speed and atmosphere.
Stability is about RPM and length. USUALLY anything longer than the 75gr A-max won't stabilize in a 223, they can't push them fast enough to stabilize. Remember length, NOT weight. the A-max is longer(by a fair amount) than the 77gr SMK.

Have you tried adjusting tension on the forearm/barrel hanger? No.1's react well to this.

How far off the lands are your loads?

I've found the 105 to be sensitive to seating depth. That 90gr NBT load is worth some tinkering too.

Definitely play with seating depth. I free floated the forearm of my #1 and it helped with the groups.

The only real help for a number one is the forearm hanger and by allmeans a new barrel as they are all long throated to the point in some the bullets would be falling out of the case to even get close to the lands.

As you noted Rugers can be very picky about what the like. I bought a Ruger 77 in 7mm Rem Mag at a great deal because the owner said it wouldn't shoot good. I found it just hated anything over 150gr. A buddy has a 77 in .260 that only likes 120gr Nosler Ballistic Tips. They also tend to have long throats.
