OMG so many long lost family members popping up out of the woodwork! I'll post pictures of mine later when I get a decent picture of it later tonight. I'm glad to see I'm not the only guy here who still has some love in his heart for the 30-06.

Rat, what load are you using with that rig and how far out are you shooting?

Now you got me all sheepish....
I have not had the opportunity to go shooting yet. My local range is building a 400 meter range but last I checked its still under construction.

I don't hand load either. I lived in Europe for 3 years and in a barracks before that so the last year or so has been my first opportunity. I have a friend who has offered to mentor me in learning to reload. I should take him up on it when I can.

In the mean time I am going to try some 165 Hornady GMXs out of it.

I was just on Savage's web site and found my stock. It is for a 12 VLP DBM: http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/12VLPDBM

disregard, wrong info, I just realized this one has a removable magazine, mine is a blind magazine. Still hunting it down.

I finally got out to shoot the thing yesterday and I was well pleased. It grouped Hornady superformance 165 grain bullets at about 1.5-2.5 inches at 100 yards. Nothing to write home about but I'll take it! The big surprise was my friend busted out a bunch of his "Cheap stuff that all 06s like." It was mixed lot Lake City brass pushing Core Lokts. My best group is circled below and measured less than 3/4 inch from 100 yards.

Yeah, that's pretty much the minimum standard for any heavy barreled savage I've ever seen. 3/4" groups with ammo that wasn't worked up for your rifle is some nice shooting. That rifle will amaze you if/when you work up a load for it.

Thanks! I honestly couldn't happier with the gun. The recoil was totally manageable, the action fed and ejected very nicely and the trigger broke pretty cleanly.

I'm watching for what's available online and once the stars align....maybe I can get a load tuned for her ;) For now I am happy to have finally had a day to shoot a little.
