Well, I have searched the forum in every way I know how. Advanced search also and cannot seem to be able to find any threads on bedding the new center feed style stocks.
My concern is the little metal tab at the rear of the magazine that sits on the rear pillar and between the action and the pillar. How do u bed this rascal with that in place and not lock in your magazine? You cannot simply leave the magazine and lock tab out because then you won't have a stress free action when u replace the mag and torque the action down.
It is not an accustock so just curious if anybody found a solution to this conundrum?
I look forward to being educated. You guys always seem to find a creative and genius solution to all concerns Savage.

I wouldn't bother bedding that area. I'd bed it at the front of the action at the recoil lug and call it good.

I had success bedding a centerfeed rifle without the magazine and clip. Then when all was done, I inletted the bedding material with careful application of a Dremel and a rasp so that the clip sits flush with the bedding material. It worked fine for me.

Alternatively, you could simply put release agent on the clip and bed it along with the action.

I would not choose to bed with the magazine in the stock, however, as it seems to me that would make things unnecessarily complicated.

YMMV

What stock are you trying to bed? I've successfully bedded an hs Precision, factory accustock, and 110ba chassis, all with centerfeed dbm:

I am thinking of bedding a Centerfeed stock from Savage. It is not the AccuStock. Just the plain-Jane stock that they put on 95% of their rifles.

The question is what to do about the plated metal clip that goes onto the back of the magazine and sits atop the rear pillar and bedding area. My concern is that if I bed the action with the little "L" clip in place, it willl effectively lock the internal magazine into the action....Conversely, if I don't bed the "L" clip in, I am negating the point of bedding the action.
My understanding of the whole point of bedding an action to a stock is to create a situation where the action is under "zero stress" as it applies to torque and twisting or bending due to the action not being perfectly mated and "square" or "flush" or whatever your chosen term of understanding.

The action must be sitting in the stock under zero "un-evenness." LOL... if thats a word..... good Lord..........I fail to communicate.

Does that make sense? I believe that due to the design of the new centerfeed actions and stocks, it is difficult to bed the rear pillar area. Which makes it unwise to bed the thing period. This particular rifle is a "tack driver" as it were, for hunting deer. And that is it's intended purpose. So really, I am just wasting my time. I just cannot help myself.... I love to work on rifles and I love Savage Rifles and I also believe it is prudent to do all I can do to make certain the machine is more capable than I.

Anyway, if you need pics to see what I am saying, just say the word.............. Maybe you have a solution that has thus far hidden itself

Here is the trick: Bed the action without the magazine or the "L" clip. Trim away the part of the "L" clip that straddles the pillar, leaving about 1/8" of the bend left. Use a dremel to remove enough bedding from original "L" clip channel that the clip seats down just below flush with the bedding. Although originally the clip is sandwiched between the receiver and the stock, its only job is to locate the magazine, and it does not have to extend back that far.

This is what I did and it works. Or you could do as Thomae suggested and trim the bedding material away with a dremel until the fangs of the l clip are back in place and flush with the bedding. I hate the whole internal box setup anyway. Keeps me from buying any more Savages without a drop box.

I did forget to mention that I sand/grind enough of the "fangs" of the clip so that the clip no longer sits on top of the pillar.

You guys must not be talking about stocks with detachable bottom metal/box magazine. I though all savages that were centerfeed were DBM? Guess not...

The centerfeed magazine bodies, springs and followers are all the same for blind and the Detachable Box Mags. The bodies sit in the stock for the blind mag with no floorplate. The floorplates for the DBM simply snap onto the mag body.
