UPS is scheduled to deliver my new McGowen barrel (SS, 24", 260 Rem, 8:1, side ported SS muzzle brake) on Friday. This is my first attempt at installing a Savage pre-fit barrel. I ordered this barrel March 3, so I am anxious to (finally) get this rifle put together (Savage target repeater action (from a 'donor' LRP), Manners MCS-T5 stock (flat black), EGW 20moa one piece scope mount, burris tactical rings, SWFA 12x42 mrad scope).

I assume that the side ported muzzle brake is not going to line up correctly/perfectly when I headspace the barrel. Therefore I will have to index the muzzle brake to align properly. What is the best method to do this?

Thanks in advance for any/all advice/comments.

Doug

The easiest way without a lathe would be using crush washer like an AR uses. If the brake is a quarter out you might want to look into measuring and having a machine shop take that much off the back measured in thousandths of course.

Peel washers might work also.

What Stang said.
I got 2 sets from Brownell's a few months ago. Only cost about 10 bucks & there's enough shims to do your rifle & hook up a friend.

I had one that came up short just a bit to index. So I filed the end of the brake a little and it indexed right on the $$$.

Have it timed on a lathe, only way to do it correctly and look right. You need to bore the center of the brake out anyways (on most brakes)
