Had an older 30-06 that needed a facelift.
I first replaced the bolt handle with an over sized knob from midway. I then installed a ptg fluted bolt body.

New shilen barrel came in. All I can say is holy varmint contour batman! This thing is heavy. If anybody has some ideas on length let me know.

Looking for a stock now.

Man I'd send that tube back and get a lighter contour!

Especially if you are going do a lot of walking to hunt with that thing. .338-06 works fine with a 20-24" sporter contour barrel since the recoil isn't punishing. Yours looks 26" plus assuming that is a 22" barrel on the donor. Ideal weight for me is 8-8.5 lbs. all up for the .338-06.

Since it is a budget build I'd buy a Boyd's Classic in walnut to save weight over the laminate.

A lot of guys looking for a walkabout use 21 and 22 inch barrels.

Lol it's defiantly beefier than I expected. But won't be walking around with it so I'm not worried. I do want a shorter barrel so it would handle better in the deer blind.

LOL this happens to me all the time. Out with the wife shopping and sometimes, killing time and trying to answer a post.

Maybe the OP could shorten the barrel and have it fluted? A short heavy barrel will still swing slower than a short lighter barrel.

I'd shorten the barrel to 20-22" and flute it as suggested, but that would probably blow the budge build out of the water. It would have been cheaper in the scheme of things to have Shilen make you the barrel, than to have a GS, shorten, flute, and re-blue the barrel. What I'd actually do is just hunt it the way it is and figure out what you like and don't like about the rifle and change it in the future. I'm sure you could find someone willing to purchase that barrel off of you since it can easily have the chamber recut into a magnum cartridge.

Lol yeah iPhone auto correct is only surpassed by this **** I pad. I'm going to hunt with it this year and get the feel of it. I had a 25-06 that was 26" long I carried it everywhere and it was heavy as hell. Shouldn't be problem.

dwa, I like the chambering, I like the barrel, and I like the stock! Waiting patiently to see it all together and a range report!

Good Luck-Good Shooting!.......Jim :-)

Kinda slapped her together tonight. I had to open up the barrel channel now I just need to smooth it up. She weighs 9.75 lbs as is so not as bad as I thought.
