I guess I should explain my situation before asking my question. I have a Savage Striker .243 that I want to switch to a .308. I have not seen a striker barrel floating around anywhere, but there are plenty of new and used .308 rifle barrels. Generaly, everyone claims there used .308 barrel has a low round count, but you never know that for sure. My question is, since the barrel is going to be cut down 6-8" and crowned, does the round count of the barrel really matter? Thanks for your input.

The crown end isn't the end that wears out, short of someone carelessly using their cleaning rod. The throat part is what wears out, and a .308 would have to have several thousand rounds thru it before that would be a real issue.

If you intend to use the breech end of the barrel, you bet it matters. The majority of wear and erosion is in the throat and first 4" to 6" of the barrel.

Shoot it competitively.

I shot two seasons of highpower with one of my 308s and the throat has moved forward over 1/2" and the first 4 inches of the barrel rifling is barely visible.
