I, along with many others here build our own Savages...If you were going to build a Scout Rifle, were would you start?

I'm looking to build a deer woods, truck gun...short, light and handy in .308 in the Scout Rifle vein...you just dont see many of these for sale...had one a long time ago...loved it, sold it when $$$ was tight (kids, mortgage, dogs). regret it to this day...but now I've started building my own Savages and would like to acquire another Scout.

I plan on starting with a 10 action 473 bolt head. I may make some lightening cuts similar to the 11 Lightweight Hunter to shave a few oz off of it...if it has an accutrigger fine, if its a 3 screw flat top I'll tune it up. It will get a CDI DBM with a few five and ten round mags.

Stock will probably be a Savage/Stevens plastic stock with LOP shortened a tad.

Barrel and Scout Sights are my sticking point...Other than ordering a complete Savage 10 Scout Barrel + Sights from Savage what is a guy to do? I'd like to pick up a .308 sporter weight barrel from the classifieds here and add a set of Scout type sights to it...any suggestions on how to mount the forward style Scout scope mounts to the barrel?

Scope would be the Burris Scout Scope or perhaps the Leupold...

Or would it just be easier to buy a used or new Factory Scout...I sure like the idea of building one...

I was looking for the same thing. Put a hog hunter barrel in a HS stock. Scope of your choice moved far forward on a pic rail and ju got it.

Oh yeah...forgot to say...barrel will be 16" and threaded for a YHM QD Flash Suppressor...

I like the way the Ruger Scout looks and feels and have shot one but its heavy with its wood stock. I think the Savage would be a better, lighter and more accurate gun...

If I started out with a basic Savage Scout ($692 from BudsGuns) I could buy Dark Eagle mags to fit the factory DBM so I've saved $300+ there...which almost pays for the Scout Scope and rings...then its just a trip to the g'smith to have the barrel shortened to 16" from 20 and have the front sight brazed back on and threaded for a YHM QD FS...I think I'm talking myself into a new Scout...hmmm

The front mount on the scout is screwed on but brazing could work I guess.

Yes Stangfish...I was even thinking about the McMillan Edge Hunters Stock at 23 ounces, lightening cuts, shorten the barrel and getting an uber light Scout...I am actually going to order one of these for a Savage 243 AI build I am working on now...got an action, a barrel and a CDI in the closet waiting for a stock, scope and rings.

The new Game Scout design is a duplicate of the Savage Classic stock but with the popular A-3 vertical pistol grip. This gives McMillan A-series stock owners a smooth transition from their tactical stock to a compact hunting stock. It is an ambidextrous stock and can be inletted for most right hand and left hand Savage type actions and for barrel contours up to about a #5 Douglas or Remington Varmint size. Will fit most older Savages and blind magazine actions. Color shown, safari camo.

Yup I knew that from before...but I'd rather see a smith braze one on that try to drill and tap new screw holes...I'd be Duracoating it anyways so messing up the blue/parkerizing isn't an issue...

After cutting the barrel to 16" a few more front and rear sight options if starting from scratch vs a new Scout...

With a CZ Patridge type that can be filed down to zero

Rear sight would probably be a Ghost Ring like this...

I want to do a 10 action with accu trigger, savage bottom metal, Choate folder stock, but it will probably just get the accustock off my predator first. I have plenty of 10 round mags. I was thinking a flash hider tritium night sights and maybe a lower powered illuminated reticle scope. I'm thinking a 16.25" sporter barrel. I think I might get to next spring, I need to start scavenging some parts.

Scope mount seems to be the hanger...didnt B-Square make the Savage Scope Mount?

Scout rifle is an outdated concept, you can do the same thing with and standard bolt gun and a low powered scope. Why not try a light handy bolt gun ? just buy a savage lightweight and add a light scope of your choice ? DONE

p.s. I still have my 20" skinny barrel from my savage scout rifle if u would like a a good deal on it pm me
