Also got to looking a little closer, I might be wrong, but the older 70's Savages, used a smooth nut with only one hole in it, unlike the slotted nut on yours. Someone MIGHT have swapped barrels on it.
Too bad Savage doesn't keep records on the old one, they could tell you what caliber it left the factory in, if ya care.
