Hello I have a competition recoil lug and barrel nut do I need to have any action work done before installing a barrel?

Might invest in a PTG bolt head. Aside from having the face of the receiver trued with a light cut, that's all you'd pretty much need I'd think.

do I need to have any action work done before installing a barrel?

Quick answer: no
I would make sure that the action/lug mating surface has no burrs and go for it
You can spend money having a smith true the surface and for that matter, time and true the action
It really depends on what you want to do as to how much you want to spend and how far you want to go
I would put it together and see how it does ( I'm cheap LOL)
Hope this helps

I'm installing a 26in #4 maybe a #3 barrel in 6.5x284, the gun will be used for deer and cow elk, and shots out to 750yds. never owed a Savage before, Thanks for your input.

Whereabouts are you? No elk in the East USA. We never get to try 750yd shots either
Just curious: do you mess with the trigger on your other rifle?

I hunt in Arizona and Colorado, and reside there, I put a Timney trigger in it and turned out very nice, just need a barrel.

Yea the Timney's are nice but a little pricey.
The thing I like about aftermarket triggers is that they let you set all your rifle triggers at the same pull weight.
