Savage 110 Series "J" magazine

I recently picked up a nice old Left Hand 110 DL Series "J". It is a little unusual in that it started life as a 7mm Rem Mag and someone had it rebored (yes, rebored not rebarreled) to 338 Mag. The rifle is in great shape. The bore is bright and sharp. The action is smooth as glass The bluing is much better than current standards and the wood stock is pretty much unmarked and has a nice worn patina that comes with age and good care.

My question is about the magazine. I don't know squat about Series "J" rifles and when I took the action out of the stock to adjust the trigger I was supprised by the magazine. The magazine is a two piece affair like a box within a box. On the starboard side there is a two inch long butterfly shaped spring and on the port side there is a clamping device that appearantly holds the whole thing together.

What is the purpose of such a complicated gadget? Why didn't Savage just use a plain one piece box magazine?

they used the same set up for there clip feeds. the rifles with a clip had a button in the side of the stock to hit that lever. change floor plate and add the button.

I just bought the same gun from a friend the other day and noticed the same thing when taking it apart. Are you saying that it is possible to have the button added and change the floor plate to make it a detachable box mag?

I have the old J action "CL" model which is what Savage called the Detachable "Clip" model. The magazines look like this (upper one) and a PIA to find:

These guns have to pushbutton through the side of the stock for a release and even Fred at SSS hadn't seen one before.

That's all beginning to make sense. The magazine well in my rifle is cut clear through the stock and the mag spring and follower are secured in the rifle by a metal plate on the bottom. It "LOOKS" like it would be simple enough to convert to a detachable magazine with the appropriate hardware and by drilling a hole in the side for a release button.

I don't think these are considered "J" actions, as there is no way to get a 7mm mag into a "J" short action without single feeding.( I know I just tried one on for size)
The 1st Gen short action commonly known as a "J" action is 4.522 centre to centre.

All I know is what is stamped on the barrel:

Right hand side "--Savage Model 110DL Series J--"
Left hand side "Proof Tested Cal 7MM Rem. Mag"

"J" series was a designation to distiguish the new changes incorporated in 1966. They were long action and short action. The first 110 "short action" came about in 1960, and used the 4.522 action screw spacing. In 1966, the bolt,trigger and magazine systems were upgraded and called the "J" series.
The magazine system that is on your rifle is same as a standard stagger feed magazine. The only difference on yours, is that is was made from left over parts.
They used the box assembly from a clip and had to utilize the magazine frame to attach it. Basically, they were out of the right mag boxes with the tabs on each end. The steel floorplate was also a fix to a problem that they had with a failed hinged floorplate system. The original hinged floorplate used a latch located on the lid, and when the rifle recoiled, the lid came open and all the shells fell out.
Because this model was already in production and all the stocks were already cut for a hinged floorplate, a solid steel floorplate was designed and utilized to salvage a costly engineering mistake.

The magazines are still available, but the hardest thing to find would be that bottom metal. Most of the later guns used a tupperware stock with no metal. Some of the wood stocked guns used a plastic frame.
