WOW Stang! Was this the rifle you mentioned to me on my thread in the scope/optics section? That's great you were able to salvage it..not only salvage but it's a real shooter too! Congratulations and thanks for posting this. I'm sure many folks would give up and believe the gun was a paperweight or a wall-hanger at that point!

My ex brother in law did the same thing to a 270 reciever and took a hammer to it befor I could get home! Dumbass lol. Guess he never heard about the 300lb gorilla savage hired to torque down barrel nuts.

I think twisting the action would be quite easy when removing a factory gorilla torqued barrel. Truing the action is one of the steps in T&T by SSS.

The Stevens 200 I just built was the very worst barrel nut I have ever experienced in my Savage builds. When I finally got it apart, there was an abundance of extremely small metal shot wedged in the threads. Once I was able to clean them out, everything worked fine. I suspect they were cleaning with the metal shot and it got into the threads at that time. Blitzfike

What? You mean I'm not supposed to jam a 4-foot long pry bar down through the ejection & magazine openings in the action to gain additional leverage?

I didn't read through the entire thread over there, but the OP is lying through his teeth when he claims he used the action wrench as close to the nut as possible. Anyone with even the most minute amount of common sense knows that clamping to and applying pressure in the front by the nut won't cause the rear half of the action to twist up like a pretzel.

This guy is clearly one of those to whom my signature would apply.

Yes, my conclusion is that the OP is flat out lying. I suspect though that those who use the rectangular section of bar through the rear of the action run a similar risk. Perhaps after you have the factory barrel off and you tighten your own barrels more gently - maybe. I think the best solution is the wrench which only engages the front of the action in the space where the bolt lugs go and has a circular section at the back of the receiver (for a multi barrel rifle).
