So I get that a lot of you guys love Varget. My local store doesn't have any, and doesn't foresee any coming in anytime soon. So...my question is... What alternate powders are there for 75gr Hnday Amax .223 target round? Out to 500 yds

Thanks!!

oh yeah. shooting out of a Savage 12FV.

For a 223 with a 75gr bullet you could go as fast as h4198 and RL7, all the way though H4350 or RL17, and all would get the job done, some better than others, but at least you would never be stranded without powder.

those all should work. only one iffy is RE10. but thats simply since I have no experience.

alliant ar-comp...I started using it here recently and its showing signs of consitancy
Ive also tried the rl-7 and love it.....little goes a long way
varget is still my go to powder though.....luckily for me the local range is starting to carry it again..."for now"... but @ 33 bucks for a lb...it hurts

Don't know if it'll work with 75's but with 52's, AA2520 has worked nicely.

8208XBR!

Works great in an AR with 77s and my 223AI with 80s. Better velocity, accuracy and metering than Varget with same temp stability.

Yeah. My only other comment would be to give the Hornady 68gr BTHP a try if you can get them. http://www.hornady.com/store/22-Cal-.224-68-gr-BTHP/ These bullets shoot really teeny groups from my Savage .223. But then......Varget.....Just saying....

For me, the best substitute I have found for Varget (when shooting the 204, 223, 22-250, light bullets in the 243, the 308, and the 30-30) has been RL-15. If Varget works well in a given application, RL-15 has served nearly as well and in a few cases better. Charge weights for RL-15 are often a touch less for me when sub'ing in RL-15 so as always work up. Only issue I have had with RL-15 has been in 1 particular 22-250 barrel I had, it showed pressure signs fairly early with RL-15 but with Varget I worked up to listed max with no issues but I attribute that to that particular barrel as other 22-250 barrels did not show the same results.

You should be able to load 280+ rds of 223 with one pound. At 15 a lb each load cost just under .09 and at $33 a lb each load cost just under .13. if you shoot 100 rds that is just bout 4 dollars difference. Shooting 223 aint so bad, if your case holds 45+ grains then it does add up a little quicker. :behindsofa:

thats a fact jack..olololo
Thats exactly why Ive pulled out my target 24" bull barrel 223 gas guns and put my 308 down for a spell while this unwanted shortage of components goes away. I own 4 different applications of them and am having a good old time "again"....
I worked up loads for all 4 of them 10 or so yrs ago. They all use Varget. Bullets range from 68/69/75/80gr...the 68s have always proven to be the most accurate
Believe you me....I know "exactly" how many rds I can juice out of a one pound Varget....
Ill still toss some out to 1K with my Savage 308, but I wont toss out as many as I used to. Heck...Ive found myself saving money.
