Ok, I'm curious what is a smokeless muzzle loader, I'm kinda envisioning the appropriate sized sabot placed in the chamber, some pyrodex behind it, a 209 primer in the bolt face and bang! Would this count as a muzzle loader for areas that require it or have extra seasons for it?

It's the same as any modern inline black powder (Pyrodex) muzzleloader only it's specifically designed (and proof tested) for using smokeless powder rather than that dirty stuff. Same exact setup as a Savage 10ML-II, they're just using an aftermarket bolt head, barrel and breech plug to convert a standard Model 10/11/12/14/16 into a muzzleloader.

The Savage 10ML and 10ML-II were the first .50 caliber muzzleloaders developed with the strength to use certain higher pressure smokeless rifle powders instead of black powder substitutes like pyrodex. With the right smokeless powder, high BC bullets and sabot combination they are accurate and deadly at extended ranges when compared to black powder rifles. They also do not require frequent cleaning as with black powder. They are legal to use in most states during ML seasons or as a shotgun/slug substitute in shotgun only states. Go to www.randywakeman.com to learn more.

Some folks are building ML's on Savage/Remington actions using aftermarket 209 bolt heads, breech plugs and custom Pre-Fit ML barrels to develop "wildcat" ML loads at their own risk.

A smokeless muzzleloader that has a custom barrel is almost always more accurate than a off the shelf store bought guns. With the Smokeless guns you can shoot BP alternatives also with the same accuracy.

03mossy,
i am about to pull the trigger and put a .45 mc gowan on my savage ml2. i am curious about how you are resizing your bullets. i have seen resizers that are smooth and some that replicate the barrels rifling. which are you using and do you like the one you are using?

acmetim,

I have not had to resize yet. The Barnes 250 TEZ's I give a slight knurl to fit a bit more snug. I have a pack of 300 grain Match Hunters on there way and they are supposed to be perfect out of the pack for these McGowan barrels. I have looked and those dies and can not make up my mind on smooth vs full form either. I do have the barrel drop for mine so I could get a full form but with a smooth die I could use it on multiple guns???

And I say pull the trigger on getting a McGowan barrel, you wont be sorry!

McGowens are great sabotless shooters. Most .45 barrels take the Parkers without any sizing.

Here is a 209 bolt head from my Stevens 200 build with a Savage plug.

Already did. I have a Savage Target Action that should be at my local FFL in a few days. Not sure what I want to do yet though. It might just be wearing a .400/.408 McGowen barrel though. Haha

Hey EdKin did you ever get your put together?

Yeah it's together. I finally got it scoped and all the stuff together for the season. I have been so busy the last couple of months I haven't been shooting it yet. I missed the last couple of weeks with cool (for August) temps now that I've got some time it back to 95-100 degrees. I hope to get a few rounds out of it this weekend. I'm going to try the 275 MH over 4198 might do a 4759/4198 duplex.

I have been shooting mine with 70gr of H-4198 and Parker 275 MH and BE's (cheaper to practice with) a 8 shot string over the chrony had an average of 2715 with an es of 16. I only have one picture on the phone of a group that was shot last week at 100 with a 15-20mph wind quartering from behind left to right measured .74 ctc

Started as a Stevens 200 .308

.45 McGowan smokeless muzzleloader barrel
B&C Duramaxx stock
SSS Fluted bolt body
209 bolt head
Rifle basix trigger
Mscott bolt handle
NSS recoil lug
NSS precision barrel nut
Talley lightweight rings
Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40

Action and all the other parts that are black are cerama coated by me.

Still in the learning phase with all things smokeless but it is showing promise at the range.

That barrel come with the breech plug?

No. You have to buy the breech plug seperate. Mine uses a tungsten bushing instead of a vent liner that traditional savages use.

Im curious, how is the recoil on your smokeless muzzleloader without a muzzle brake?

Well It Certainly Gets Your Attention lol. The saboted loads I started with were around .243 levels, very easy shooting. The full power sabotless loads I have worked up to Are fairly hard kicking. I was shooting it along side my lightweight 30-06 a couple weeks ago and the 30-06 kicks significantly less. I have a large enough build and young and dumb enough to enjoy heavy kickers.

Does mcgowen make any ramrod brackets that attach to their smoke less barrels so you can keep that ramrod attached to the muzzleloader?

45omega
12-27-2014, 10:26 PM
No. Thats pretty much a DIY project if you want the rod on the gun. Smokelessmz sells 3 piece collapsible bungee corded ramrods in a nylon sheath which pack easy in a hunting vest pocket and deploy quick for reloads.
