I got my new 10TR for hunting. I know what you're going to say, but I already have a 10FP that I use for long range with 168 and 175 FGMM. I got this gun because it was the same price as the Hog Hunter, which I was intending to hunt with, but this is just a better rifle.

Anyway, I know my 10FP shoots better with heavier bullets. It throws 150gr all over the place, so I can only assume this TR will do the same. It has a 1:10 twist on a 5R barrel. I'm thinking about some 180gr corelokt, or in that area.

So does anyone else hunt with theirs, and if so, what hunting rounds are you using?

What are you hunting? And what distance? For Eastern whitetails, hogs and the like I developed a load for 125gr Sierra Pro Hunter ( for a 22" 10 twist sporter barrel ) and it shoots great at 200yd. Different rifle and heavier bullets for larger game

Deer, mainly, and hogs whenever I can go to the other side of the state. Typical shot where I'm shooting is around 50-100yds. I hunt in heavy pines. The barrel on this TR is 20" heavy barrel.

I don't have a reloader yet, so I'm stuck with factory bullets.

Sorry I cannot recommend a factory load. Usual advice is to try various ones until you find something that works; of course you are looking for someone who has already done this to shorten the process. Since the FGMM shoots well, maybe try one their similar hunting counterparts (in terms of bullet weight and velocity).

I don't care what your rifle "doesn't like", If your rifle can't group a kill shot at 50-100 yards; send that tomato-stake back to Savage!!!
150-165 gr bullets will do the job perfectly fine. Start testing.

I just hate it that the testing phase gets expensive.

I take it you don't reload. Get the cheapest name brand and go shoot it. Look for the 165 or 180 class bullet to get the best accuracy. Try core lokt 180 grain also it is cheap and a show stopper for the animal. $22.xx at bass pro shops. Not disagreeing with Darkker but for me, I have had the best luck accuracy wise in the heavy bullets when going cheap. 150's will get the job done every time however.

Am I mistaken or aren't the 5R barrels 1:11.25?
I haven't checked my TR with a cleaning rod yet.
I hunt with 165 gr Accubonds in my .30s and they work quite well indeed.

The federal premium loaded with the 165 game king would be my choice if I didn't reload.

I agree. They are awesome on deer.

Federal Fusion ammunition has been accurate in three calibers that I have used it in. 300WSM, 243,and 22-250. Might give it a try.

I thought the 10TR was 10:1 twist, but reviewing the internet there really isn't mention of the twist rate. And it's not on the barrel, just model 10.

I have mainly shot the 150 GR and get sub MOA easily with the cheaper ammo. Getting 5 boxes of 125 GR that have great ratings as a hunting round.

Just an update. Shot it yesterday out to 225yds. Sighted in at 100yds. First up was 145gr wolf. I was using this to get my scope on paper. Surprisingly, this stuff shot right at MOA. I was pretty impressed with this stuff. I was still getting MOA at 225yds. Since this was going to be for hunting, I put some 150gr and 180gr Corelokt through it. It shot a two inch group with 150gr. This was strange to me because it shot the 145gr quite well. I put that ammo aside, and shot the 180gr though it. It shot sub moa, right at .5 inch. So, my rifle likes heavy ammo. Just for kicks, I shot some 168gr and 175gr FGMM. The 168 shot MOA, the 175 shot sub moa, around .75 inch. I know its a new rifle, so I'm expecting the groups to tighten up. Also, seeing as to how I was at the hunting property, I shot out of the bed of a truck. I'll take it to a bench next time.

I tried various lighter grain bullets that were on sale and they were all over the place. 180 gr Winchester was right around 1 moa at 100. I've got some 168 gr Hornady hpbt that I will be loading up as well at 168 gr amax. I'll be picking the best for the 10FP and the other will be reloaded for my m14. I'll post pics of the groups right after I shoot them for comparison.
