223 7 twist question

I just got a 223ai 7 twist barrel
& I'm wondering what weight bullets have you seen work in these
I know its ok with the heavies
& that's mostly why I got it -to shoot 75-90 gr bullets
I have a friend who shoots a Savage 12 223 7 twist
who says some lighter bullets he's tried will -disintegrate -(make a small cloud & not hit the target)-
at about 50 -70 yards out
-out of his 7 twist 223
he seems to be a very honest man
has any one ran across this before?
seems like it would shoot any weight bullet

It does happen but it depends on several factors. New barrels with nice smooth bores can shoot them without much trouble. But once the bore starts getting a little rough, the bullets will "poof"!

If you use a barrel burner it will blow them from the get go sometimes even the heavies, even with a nice smooth bore finish.

Ive found that in that twist, the heavier the projectile, the lighter the push with more accuracy. They dont like to be pushed hard

RPM's get too high and the jackets fail, My old .22-250 with the fast twist on it was excellent on the heavier 60+ grain bullets but the 30-40 grain screamers would come apart.

I know several guys that us the 7 twist with the heavies and varget for out to 600 with good results but I know the new philosophy is that you can do as good with 8 twist or just under. I would not own a 22-250 with that twist but that is a different animal.

I've found just the opposite. I shoot 80gr Berger VLD's out of a Shilen Select Match 1/7. The max load of Varget (25.0) gives me 3050fps and the best 100yd groups of .255, and sub MOA groups at 500 meters.
Sierra's latest loading manual also shows the recommended "accuracy" load with their 80gr Match Kings to be 24.5gr Varget.

Edit to add: I'm shooting a .223 Wylde chamber. I don't know if you can use the 80 or 90gr bullets in a regular 223 Rem chamber. But the 75 - 77 gr. should still shoot extremely well.
