Was wondering If the 1 in 12 twist rate savage list on there target .308 model with the 30 inch barrel would stabilize 185 and 190 bullets? I know the 1in10 IS a better choice but thats the fastest twist rate they offer In .308 in there target series. I have a LE series .308 now with a 20 inch 1in10 twist that shoots half moa with handloads. Was wanting to go with a longer barrel to get the velocity for the heavier bullets, 20 inch tube hard to get good velocity with the 190 and heavier stuff and the 30 inch tube on the rifle Im asking about would be awesome, but the 1in12 twist isnt going to work with anything heavier than 185s or 190s is It?

My factory barreled 308 F/TR would stabilize a Berger 185 gr. BTLR but not the Hybrid. I don't think your going to be able to get a 190 gr. bullet to fly right with a 12 twist.

Im liking the bench rest rifle with the 29 inch heavy barrel also. Think I shouldnt have any problems stabilizing 175 matchkings with that gun. The sierras have been my best load for my current rifle. I mainly just want to get velocity up without max charges, where i shoot has alot off cross winds. Velocity will help stabilze longer heavier bullets and the extra velocity gained from the barrel length should hopefully help with the not ideal 1:12 twist, I hope anyway.

Why not just rebarrel? Shilen has drop in replacement barrels for Savage.

I have one of the 30" 1:12 barrels you might be able to talk me out of. Going 7mm for the 1000yd mark.
