In the near future I want to barrel a Savage to .25-06.

I noticed that Shilen only has 1:9, 1:10, 1:12, and 1:14.

I'd like to have this rifle as a long range deer/varmint rifle.

I know some of you deal with sharp shooter supply...... who else do you deal with? And can I get a faster twist than 9?

Or what twist do you recommend? Will a 10 do both? I have a 10 in a .243 and am disappointed and in the past was disappointed with a 12.

A 10 twist in 25 cal will stabilize the 115s and 117s just fine. I have a couple 250-3000s that run the 115 Berger beautifully at just under 2800 fps. That same bullet at 3000 plus shouldn't be a problem at all. Shilen is a good barrel but I like and recommend the CBI barrels sold by Northland.

I have had great luck with my CBI from NSS. Shoots great and cleans easy. Shilen is also very high quality. I had a McGowan and Pac-Nor that both shot terriffic and I even have a lowly little ER Shaw in 7mm Mag that brings me 5-shot groups in the .3's at 100yds.

For my money CBI is the way to go for the best value, and terrific accuracy.

CBI is Criterion Barrels. Here is a link to the Northland Shooting Supply (NSS) page here on CBI barrels. Best way to find out about CBI's is to call NSS and talk with Jim Briggs. He is a great guy to talk to and full of knowledge. He can tell you all about them and keeps quite a few on the shelf.

He can order you one and save you a little money in the process. I would just go through him if I had to order a barrel anyways. He also stocks shilen barrels as well, he might have one of theirs on the shelf.

Oops, your right, they don't list any .257cal stuff. As stomp said give Jim a call anyway. He can hook you up with a Shilen or maybe CBI has added 257 stuff since Jim last updated the list.

Criterion's home page now lists 25-06 so Jim can probably get it. Give him a call, you won't be sorry.

what does this description mean.... from shilen?

pre turned $ 200.00
unturned $ 165.00

I would say they are pricing a raw unturned blank (which would require a smith to turn it on centers and setup and idicate to the bore for chambering, threading and contouring) and a machined blank (which should already have the ends faced and turned between centers so the smith can just indicate and chamber, thread, and contour).

I would say unless you want something done special by a smith hired by you, that you need to be looking for "Savage Pre-fits" when shopping for a barrel. That will be a barrel that is (when you recieve it) ready to screw on and headspace on your action.

stomp why do you prefer CBI over Shilen?

Mainly because they are a little cheaper and they are just as accurate and clean up just as easy. From what I understand, Criterion is a sister company of Krieger specializing in cut rifled barrels. So you know its a quality barrel as well and not just some guy in his garage turning barrels.

+1 on the Criterion Barrel. I have one on a Stevens 200 that my friend and I each built one of. It is chambered in 243 1 in 8 twist. We shoot 105 Amaxs really well. Beautiful barrel for the money.

Don't know if this is just a syntax thing but CBI barrels are button rifled while Krieger are cut rifled. Just clearing that up for the OP.

Great!! have fun.

I rebarreled a 243 way back with a 1:12..... shoulda got a 1:8.... but was concerned about only using varmint bullets so wanted to stay away from the 1:8... I'd still have it, but I traded for a custom mauser that used to be mine from a local gun shop I traded from a guy who traded me my mauser for a M700. He traded a pistol for my mauser and one day I went to the gunshop wherehe swapped and there was my mauser with a 1:10 that shot better than the savage I rebarreled. SO I traded the savage, got back my mauser.... but now I want to build a 25-06 on a 110 I picked up yesterday, in a .30-06.
