300 Win mag or 338 Edge: M111 Action ok?

Looking to do either a 300 Win Mag or a 338 Edge as my next rifle. My 260 is a tack driver and hoping to stretch its legs here in the upcoming weeks, but I want to start looking at a build for longer distances.

Looking to purchase an M111 action from Jim @ NSS (.532 bolt head) and then a 30" Bull Barrel in 300 Win Mag or a 338 blank and have my local smith ream it for 338 Edge.

I've got the following questions:
1) Is the M111 action sufficient to handle either of these cartridges?
2) Planning to go without the AccuTrigger and then drop in a Rifle Basix SAV-2, good idea?
3) Is the M111 action a small shank or large shank?

Any additional thoughts I should be thinking about?

First off your 260 will run out farther than the win mag. At 1k my 260 handloads have the a slight edge (fps or ft lbs) on any factory 300 win mag ammo. I would go .300 RUM if you want a 30 cal and .338 RUM or .338 edge if you want a 338.

The 300 Win Mag, I would probably be running the 230gr Bergers. I am however leaning more and more towards a 338 Edge and running the 300gr SMK or the 300gr Berger. The smith that did my 260 has a wood for the 338 Edge and we talked about it for a couple of hours when I picked up my 260.

He's also trying to convince me that I want a Stiller Tac300 as the basis for this build :eek: If I get extra fun money, I might just go that route :cool: But for now, an M111 is a cheap starting point.

If you are going to ditch the accu-trigger anyway, you might as well start with a Stevens 200.

Then get a stock with a factory DBM inlet filled by the Accurate CIP length DBM.

Except that Jim doesn't have any 200 Stevens actions in stock. For $300, you can get an M111 action w/out AccuTrigger. I'm good with that price.

My 260 can keep up with the 300 Win Mag for a while. At least up to 1k. I want to be able to shoot at close to 1 mile and for me at least, the 338 Edge is the ticket. I'm keeping the 300 WM as an option, but I know that I am going to spend some money on this build so want the best that that money can buy. I do NOT want to do a 338 LM. Just too expensive to shoot in the long run.

If I decide to go 300 WM, I'll go through Jim, but a 338 Edge will probably go through my local smith. Like I said, he's got a wood for the 338 Edge and he has several rifles in that caliber. He's got all the reamers to do it right and he's got experience with it.

I wrote responded in he box above suggesting the 338 LM but realized you were looking at the Edge. I just went through this thought process and settled on the 300 Win Mag over the 338 LM. 338 too expensive right now to shoot, but I did tell Jim that if he gets an action in I will by it with a barrel and make a project out of it, I shot Vulcans in the Army for 8 years, I love shooting big bullets. I am not familiar with the Edge at all though.

Google the 338 Edge. 300 RUM necked up to 338. Similar ballistics to the 338 LM without the requirement for a LM bolt head and LM brass.

I was just over at the McGowen Outlet and for $369, I can get a 30" barrel in 338 Edge (1/9 twist and heavy target profile). Pre-fit for a Savage Small Shank Action. This project may not cost as much as I thought it might. The 338 Edge Match I hope is throated longer to use the 300gr SMK and hopefully the 300gr Berger (the BC on this bullet is frickin' amazing).
