I been thinking a lot about survival firearms....best bang for the buck, most common ammo types and the ability to take one gun and shoot 2 different kinds of ammo. Does anyone have any experience with these savages? and are the combo firearms fairly accurate? Also did savage ever make a 12g/22lr combo....

I personally think that these are the best rifle of choice for a survival type weapon. I have a 24 J-DL in 20 ga./ .22 Win. Mag. In this combo, you could basically take almost anything that is huntable. Deer with a 20 Ga. slug. Most gamebirds and waterfowl with 20 ga. shot, and most varmints with the .22 win mag. As far as accuracy goes, the 22 Win. Mag on my gun is far more accurate than I can shoot it with open sights. At 50 yards I can keep the shots under 3/4 inch, but I'm sure with a scope it would shoot like a house of fire. Speaking of survival guns, I just picked up a Model 24 C Campers companion. These are ideal for that purpose. Very portable, ammo storage in the butstock and chambered for 22 short, long, long rile/20 gauge. All in allthese are great guns.

Just inherited my Dads 24-v Series C .222/20 gauge. Let my little sisters son keep it for a while. He and his Dad do a lot of varmint hunting. It was/is a good turkey gun as well. Don't know what a gun like this is worth, this one to me is priceless.

The one I'm looking at now is a ..223/12 both highly common rounds. 12g is still at least cheap and readily available and .223 hunting ammo is available on line for a decent enough price.

IMO both the .223 and 12ga are a little heavy for "survival" needs. If you're stuck in the woods, what's going to be the most plentiful game you come across? Rabbits and squirrels I would think. Wouldn't be much left of either with the .223, and a 12-gauge usually tears them up pretty good at closer ranges as well.

I'll stick with my trusty 22LR/20ga Model 24C. ;)

I have a 24F .30-30 over 12 gauge. It is the single most useful firearm I own. With proper shot placement, it can easily take anything in North America, whether it walks, crawls, flies, slithers or whatever. I can and do load the .30-30 with 100 gr. cast SWC bullets meant for the .32 revolvers and I shoot squirrels without ruining any meat. What's that, they're running? Then shoot them with the shotgun barrel if necessary! Nothing gets away from me when I carry this gun into the woods. The .223 is way too small and lacks versatility. Being a single shot, the .30-30 barrel can be safely loaded with pointed bullets for better performance at longer range. I was surprised that my rifle barrel is extremely accurate. If you are a handloader, .30-30 over 12 gauge is definitely the way to go. I'm planning to mount a Leupold 1-4x scope on mine and then I'm going to shoot some trap with it to see how 1x works on fast flying targets. It would add some bulk, but then it just might increase the flexibility of both barrels.

I have a Model 24 Series P Serial No. B964XXX Is a .22LR over 20 Guage 3" Chamber. Does any one know what choke was wsed in the 20 Ga. barrels? Also, does any one know what year it was made? It has a hardwood (not walnut) stock.

I have 2 24's one 357 over 20 ga. and a 30-30 over a 20 ga. The 30 -30 is stock, the 357 has been shortened to 18" with choke tubes fir the shotgun bbl.It also carries 2 fold down sights for the 357 (1 for 38 squib loads and 1 for the full house 357 loads. ) Either one of them works very well in the "survival Gun class", however the little 357 carries much better. They also benefit from being able to reload ammo with different types of bullets than are available with factory loads.Of course the 20 ga barrels are chambered for all the way up to 3" Mag loads .With either one of these and a 22 pistol I feel well prepared for any type of survival situation that might arise.

What are the triggers like on these guns, weight of pull and creep? Any thoughts of value of a Model 24P, 2 lr and 20 g, in very good condition?

Hey kens, to answer your question, the trigger pull on mine is about 7 to 8 lbs with some creep. I paid $375.00 for mine in 98% cond. I have a series P .22LR over 20Ga.3". I read somewhere that these are not too hard to do a trigger job on, but I have not tried it.

Thanks for the reply Jeep! I really like my 24P except for the trigger, now I can fix that!
