I have a new 270 we purchased and just took it out and shot it for the first time yesterday. The problem i am having is when you pull the bolt back 99% of the time the shell will not be chambered into the barrel it is almost like the clip isnt releasing the bullet for the bolt to place it into the barrel. Is there something im doing wrong or is this a common problem that others are having?

thanks for any help or advice

It sounds like the magazine and action are too far apart. Possible issues could be:
1. The magazine might not be really and truly fully seated.
2. Your action screws could be loose.

I'd check those two items first.

If they are really ok, then we can move on to further troubleshooting.

Feed lips not letting the round come up high enough?

Forgive me if I am repeating what has already been stated. Are you pulling the bolt back to the stop before you push forward? If you are, from your description I believe the case is not sitting high enough for the bolt head to push the cartridge into the chamber. Something I would look into is when the magazine is loaded and the bolt is removed from the actiion, you should be able to look through the action into the chamber and see a portion of the case/rim sticking up high enough for the bolt to catch and push into the chamber. If not you might need to "adjust" the feed lips on the magazine. Let us know what you find.

Would the baffle behind the bolt head need to be rotated 180 deg? You know the one one that determines if it's LA or SA type round?...

Not meaning to insult anyone, but I always look at possible shooter error first -- and it sounds like you might be short-stroking the action.

okay the bolt is always pulled fully back so there is no short stroking going on there. It almost acts as if the bolt doesn't try to pickup the round to load it into the barrel. How do i adjust the feed lips on the clip if that is what you guys are thinking it is? Could there be a spring problem in the clip not enough pressure?

Feed Lips IMO unless the spring is bound, backwards or something weird.

Frankly, I don't have enough info yet to form an opinion. Pictures would help. I have an Axis .270 I could compare them to.

concur with Thomae--check those first (as per owner's manual).

Have you confirmed that the feed lips need adjusting by the test in my first post? In order to determine the problem we need to verify what it is doing and what it isn't doing.

What are you up to Frank?

Staying out of trouble. Or trying to, anyway...
How about yo' sef, Mr Stang?

To the OP - I even hesitate to mention this...
With the gun outside, aimed in a safe direction & the safety on, slowly chamber a round or two & carefully watch what happens using a flashlight.
The mag / feed system on the Axis is pretty simple & if you're not getting a proper feed each time, there's only one of 2 or 3 things it can be.
Try that. Watch carefully. Explain what you see going on.

That's was why I mentioned it. Drove me crazy for 45 minutes one day.

Hey Ravenous2, did you find and solve the problem yet?
