my buddy is building a 7mm ultra mag. based on an older 110 non accu-trigger action, its chambered in 7mm rem. mag. now.
what will he have to change to do the conversion to the ultra mag.(other than the barrell of course)

A larger bank account to feed it and a much bigger pad for the recoil. I am not sure if he will need a large shank action or not, That would be my only other concern.

Nah, Small shank will work. Just go with a heavier barrel profile, maybe a magnum or varmint contour just to put a lil meat around the chamber for safety's sake, and I wouldn't go any shorter that 26" in length so you get a complete burn. Several members here have built 338 Edge (300 RUM necked up to 338) rifles on small shanks and report no ill issues at all. Only real issue you will have is it will have to be single shot as the RUM is too long for the regular magnum magazine.

any bolt face changes? or anything else? this is going to be set up for long range use(up to 2000+ yds) so it will be a heavy sucker.

thanks for the help..gm

I believe the 7rem mag is a .532 and the ultra mag is a .534. There is a thread with the compatable bolt heads. maybe someone will post the link or try the search box. Hope that helps.

the 7mm rem Mag will work. Savage used the same bolt heads for the Standard magnums and the RUM's. Just different front baffle IIRC.
Here is the link to the FAQ bolt head page if that helps:

boots has it correct. At a minimum, a barrel is the only change necessary. If you want a repeater, there are a bunch of changes that need to be made.
