Lothar Walther Barrels

Just returned from the S.H.O.T. Show and talked with thier Pres./CEO Woody Woodall at length. Anyone who has used thier barrels, I would value your opinion of them. Every barrel maker says they have the best. Just want to know what the talk is in the "real world".

they are good barrels, sometimes its hard to get them when they tell you that you will get them.

I had 2 a 24" 1-14"twist 6mm BR and a 28" 1-8"twist .260 Both shot fantastic, I would not hesitate to use them again.
Both barrels cleaned easy and shot in the .2''-.3'' with little load work.

I just sold one and I am still wondering if I did the right thing. I loved it. It shot really well and cleaned exceptional. I also would not hesitate to get another one.

Probably just a coincidence, but my two most accurate barrels are Lothar Walthers (a .223 Remington & a .308 Winchester). Oh yeah, I'd buy another in a heartbeat!

I'd like to get enough of us lobbying for Lothar Walther to build 7mm Rem Mag as a standard option for ordering a finished barrel rather than a custom order-only option. Maybe getting a .284 Winchester and having the chamber reamed would be the most economical option.

I am waiting on my 6.5 CSS barrel from them. Ordered in Dec., and was told Jan. production run and would ship in Feb. Not a real popular caliber, so they have a limited run. I will post results when I get it up and shootin'.

Heard nothing but good about them, AND they make a Savage drop in 6.5 CSS. (aka 6.5 Grendel)

I thought so. Sold my A.A. upper and kept the dies, brass and bullets for the bolt gun. I am really looking forward to seeing how this will perform. I was shooting 107 SMK's ahead of 31.5 grains of BLC-2 and getting 1/2 MOA groups. I hope to be able to change seating depth more, instead of loading to mag length, to see if there are improvements.
All this on my 10 FCP HS, with a PPC bolt head.

Sounds interesting, will have to keep up with how it shoots...sounds like it will be much like a 6.5 PPC.

I got one 2 years ago in 22-250. Darn if my RL15 or anything else would shoot in it. I finally put the thing in the corner and said that I got a bummer. Took it out of the corner a year later and started load development over again @33.0 grains of RL15 and the thing shoots through the same hole @ 100 yards for 5 shots all day long. It produces same-like pressures with less powder...........That's what threw me off.

That barrel is so accurate that I only use it to test powders, then take it off and put it back in the case.

Tell you something else that I use that barrel for......I use it to test the bedding of my rifles. If it shoots thru the same hole with my load of 33 grains of RL15 {all actions are tuned}, then I know that the bedding is fine. And, iffin it dosen't, then I know that said stock needs some bedding work.

I have two and I love them. I have a 28" .260 Rem and a 26" .300 Win mag, both varmint contours. I just picked up a McGowen 28" .308 small shank bull and after the experience I have had with them, I think I might stick with Walther's for later builds. It is kind of funny though, I had a vendor here tell me that the Lothar Walther barrels are not good match barrels but great hunting barrels. I thought that was a little silly, but to each their own.

The only experience I have with Lothar is on my Serbu BFG-50 .50 BMG rifle.
It shoots pretty darn well imo but that is with remanufactured 650 grn ball and API. I have shot delinked ball out at Fort Hood and was dropping E-type silhouets at 1500 meters like it was going out of style.
My BN CDR loved the Serbu and had me bring it to a couple of ranges for fun.

The real plus for the LW barrels, is that they are ready to ship immediately for small shank barrels. I have been quoted anywhere from 12 weeks to 18 weeks for a barrel from any of the custom barrel makers that are considered to be of high quality. My new build is on a TA or else I would buy one of their barrels right now. It would be a no brainer for a small action IMO. I have never heard one bad thing about their barrels and much good.

I've had several and every one was very accurate, cleaned up fast. But the most accurate one was my 204 Ruger. WOW.
