Has anyone found any appreciable difference between 4064 and RL15 in the 22/250? What are your thoughts? I"m only interested in accuracy loads. I'm shooting a factory 1:12 (or 14) 26" stainless varmint barrel and Sierra 52 gr MK, FED match primers in R-P cases. I'm looking for a subsitute for the 4064 as I'm out of it and want to shoot before I can get more.

Other options could be 10x or Varmint if anyone cares to comment on those two powders.

If your out of 4064 and you have RL15, then try it. RL15 is a great powder in the 22-250. I personally use XMR 4064 but have tried RL15 and it shot well.

RL 15 is a great powder it always gets overshadowed by Varget, but as far as burn rate they are really close to each other as far as 4064, so go for it you might even stick with it.

DeanI may be imagining things--but RL15 seems to have less wallop in recoil than the 4064 and also seems to compress more easily for the same weight. Not sure about the fps equivalency tho.

RL15 will be equal or faster than 4064 it burns cooler and smoother, that takes away the harshness.

I believe one is a single base & the other a double base powder. I forget which is which....
See if this helps any:

H380 is a great powder. Meters well, and is good for dang near any rifle cal. I've been using 50gn's H380 in 200gn HPBT 8x57 loads. Brutal recoil... but fun to shoot.

BUT.... not to get off topic... I've also used RL15 in that same gun. It's fine... but I like the H380 more. It's a little more versatile.

Oh... and depending on how you are loading... the H380 is larger in volume, and it fills the larger cartridges better. I know you are doing 22-250... but H380 is too bulky to go down into a 223 rnd without tapping, and compressing.

Funny how that works...
I tried H380 a few months ago in a 223wssm. It totally sucked. I couldn't do anything with it. That can of H380 currently resides in the stash cabinet, all alone in the dark, by itself, away from the other powders.
I hate it. It meters like sugar. I've heard guys say it doesn't ignite well unless you use a magnum primer.

Yep... if there was one best powder, that everyone liked... then all the other would go out of biz. (lol)

My favorite powders were from Accurate long ago... but then there was quallity issues, and then I moved. Where I'm at now... it seems like no one carries it. So... I've switched to mostly Hogdon. But, I use some RL once in a while, just to change things up.

Oh... I like Winchester powders too. I guess over the years, I've migrated to the ball powders as my favorites.

Sorry that was off topic a little... but... as far as 4046 or RL15... both will work... so buy what's easier to get local to you.

I'm using Varget and 8208 and find them near identical, shooting nickel sized patterns. 8208 is known for its temperature tolerance, not reacting to cold mornings and warm or hot afternoons. Try some IF you can find some.

I have used IMR 4064 since about 1966 in about 5 or 6 different 22-250s and just about a year tried some RL15 because I was low on 4064. I did not notice a lot of difference in the 2 either in use or results. I did go back to 4064 because I found an 8lb jug of it. I am a believer in IMR4064 for 22-250, 308, 243, and I am going to try it in 6mmbr.
