View Full Version : Modifying my savage 110 30-06

I was thinking about adding some upgrades to my savage 110 30-06. To be honest I don't know where to start and is the rifle "worth" modifying or should I look into a different platform? I don't intent to spend a butt load of money, but some things here and there to make it more enjoyable to shoot. As of now I have the scope taken care of and a butt stock extension to reduce recoil.

Thank you for your suggestions.

Lots of people upgrade triggers. For me a rifle is a tool and a hobby. The goal is fun. Fun is subjective but accuracy comes to mind. Quality scope, rings and mounts as well as proper pillar and bedding.

Easton,

What sort of use will the rifle see?

Moderate at most.

Triggers and stocks are usually the easiest to begin with.

I'd screw on a .308 varmint barrel and drop it into a Choate tactical stock. If that's more than you want to do, maybe a 1-piece base and have your current stock bedded.

What JCalhoun, and Stangfish said... Best bang for the buck.

A few considerations, Trigger first, if the rifle has an accutrigger, might go right to adding pillars and bedding the stock. Making sure the barrel free floats, although my rather accurate Remmy 700 has a nub that provides upward pressure on the barrel at the forend tip. Some folks might ditch a Savage plastic stock in favor of an aftermarket upgrade. I like Boyds, YMMV. How does the stock fit? A $19.99 cheek rest helped one of my rifles fit better, aligning the eye better to the scope, made the rifle more comfortable, accuracy improved, rifle more fun. Strong rings and scope mounts are often overlooked. A good solid scope is a necessity. Oh yea, by the way, trigger first.

I have the 111 series with the plastic stock. If you don't have an accutrigger I would recommend the Rifle Basix line I got the SAV-1 for $85 it makes a lot of difference. The next upgrade will be a premium stock of some kind.

I personally love the 30-06 and if you don't reload you are A LOT more likely to find 30-06 than 308. Reloading will also improve accuracy (with tailored rounds).

You said you were good with the scope. So here is what I would do

1. Upgrade the trigger, unless you have an accutrigger
2. Upgrade the stock if plastic. Or if you have a wood/laminate stock. Glass bed and pillar bed.
3. Get the best scope mounts you can afford (assuming you haven't already)
4. Upgrade your barrel, stick with the '06

This is the exact order I plan on doing my gun in.

Excellent program, and one you can do one step at a time. Easy on the budget, and will yield improvements at each step.

I'm looking to get a savage this year and will probably get the 06. Partly due to the fact that I have dies and also I have not seen 308 on the shelves for almost 6 months. I can buy all of the 06 I can carry as that and 300wsm is all that is available.
