308 Winchester, 458WSM, 510WSM (RUM shortened), and a new one I'm working on.....the 500 Ruger

The 510 is actually made using the ultra mag brass.....I was having trouble getting the WSM brass up to .510 without losing some. The WSM brass works well but the losses are not acceptable. The only thing about the RUM brass is it must be turned because of the thickness.

Recoil on these isn't as bad as I anticipated it would be...especially the .510.........Now that big 500 will be a different story I bet!!!

510- turning of the rum case used to create a shoulder?

No the RUM brass is too thick for the chamber as is. After 2 full power loads the brass smooths out rather nicely. 45K pressure tends to do that......The WSM cases work fine but the case conversion failure is too high. I lost 6 out of 50. It headspaces off the case mouth similar a rimless pistol case.........which makes case length very critical.

This is made using the 50 Alaskan Reamer and dies.......no custom reamer or custom dies needed for this one. Load data is the same also, but can go to higher pressures if needed because the rifle and the parent case were developed to handle higher pressures than the 50 Alaskan.

Very nice big bore.

50 Alaskan loads are a handful though not too bad and will handle any of the remaining T-rex herds you may happen to run upon. :p

I'm really looking forward to the 500 Ruger.........That's gonna be a BAD BOY!!! Uses the same bullets 500 S&W. The 500 grain Hornady at 2800FPS+ is gonna be a big hammer.

It might even be able to handle a big bull prairie dog charge! As long as I use a head shot I suppose.

Those look like some nice thumpers. What brass is the 500 Ruger based off of (or am I missing the obvious?)?

LOL!! Yep........Ruger basic brass......used to make 375 or 416 Ruger. Trimmed to 2.66" and run it through a long action with a mag bolt face.

I think I'm gonna name it the 500 Hammer Prairie Dog Thumper or 500 HPDT in honor of our very own Hammer. :p I think he'd like that.

I should have known that, sometimes the answer is right in front of my face. I always seem to forget about basic brass.

I thought about doing something similar with the Ruger basic brass. I'm curious to see how this works for you. It would make a great round on a Striker.

It would be a handful!!!

Ruger basic can be used for a 500 S&W rimless magnum BTW. Same dies and reamer. Headspaced on the case mouth of coarse.

Looks like great fun! But make sure you look into the 500MDM (500cal on basic full-length Ruger brass) plus the 500B&M (50 on a shortened RUM), and the 50B&M super-short for WSSM actions. There's also load data for these floating on the internet, plus all are contained in the QuickLoad database for those doing load development using QuickLoad.
Cheers...

As the Bible says "there's nothing new under the sun" and you guys from OZ seem to be faster at wildcatting new brass than us Americans are. ;) :p

The 500MDM is exactly what I had in mind......I figured it had been done but haven't seen anything on it. QuickLoad is on my "short" list. Hopefully in the next month or so.

I can whole-heartedly recommend QuickLoad. A wonderful tool for reloading wildcats. It allows you to see many wildcats aren't worth the gains (if any), but I figure the value is in the education you get fooling with unique stuff.

I'm just glad the Savage action lends itself so well to crazy ideas.
Cheers...

The Savage is the BEST action for wildcat experiments available to the public. IMHO.

Will be sending some rounds down range tomorrow I hope.....try to get some pics up.
