I am picking up a Savage 30-06 this week and want to immediately replace bottom metal and stock. I am looking at CDI bottom metal but not sure if their detachable mag set-up will work with 30-06. A few people have advised me to purchase a .308 Savage 110 as opposed to a 30-06 111 but I have a ton of ammo on hand and don't want to have to restock during this panic for a new caliber.

My goals for the rifle are primarily hunting(Elk, Mule Deer and Bear), but since I used to do a lot of long range shooting with a .243 110 I want to have the ability to reach out and touch targets out to 800-1000 yards.

Any advice would be appreciated. I plan on purchasing the base rifle by Wednesday and have a budget for the entire build of $1200.

What type of bottom metal should I go with? Stock? Barrel? Scope recommendations? Favorite hand load specs? I need it all.

Thanks in advance.

Take a look at stockys for a new stock. You might check PTG for custom quality bottom metal.

Any reason not to use the Savage bottom metal that, I infer from your post, comes with your rifle?

For hunting, I see no reason to change it, unless you simply want to, which is a perfectly acceptable reason, although more expensive.

If it were me, I'd likely save my $$ and use the money for something else, perhaps optics.

From my research (Full disclosure, I haven't changed DBMs) the CDI DBM bottom metal and mags will work for 30-06 if you buy the .300 winmag magazines. I would give CDI a call. They have a good rep for customer service.

I see no reason to choose .308 over your 30-06. .308 is the tacticool thing right now, and a fine caliber but 30-06 has been working on every game species on the planet for forever. Your friends say why .308? If you want a heavy barrel from Savage it might be worth it to go .308. For about $200 more Savage will build you a heavy barrel 30-06 (I am having them do this very thing, a 30-06 112FCV) which will put it on the same price point as the 110 .308s and you wouldn't have to buy new ammo.

Thanks. Looking at Stockys right now. I think I am going to pick up a Bell and Carson Medalist. Looks like exactly what I wanted.

I was under the impression that the DBM on the stock 111 was crap and the mag capacity is limited to 4 rounds. Is this true? Does anyone make a larger capacity magazine that's compatible with the factory bottom metal?

Only for the .308 family :(

Maybe someone out there makes on for the .270/ 30-06/ .300 winmag family but IDK.

Dang, That's too bad. I'll email them and see if they have any other ideas to make it work.
