I have had this rifle for a couple of years and have only put around 100 rounds through it so far. I have tested a few load using mag pro, 4831SC and 4350. They all have shot reasonably well but not as good as some of my other Savage rifles (I have the same rifle in 308 that is crazy accurate and an LRPV in 6mm BR that is also wicked accurate)

In any case I blame myself for not spending enough time punching paper at 200 yards to really see what shot well as I always end up shooting steel downrange at 600 to 1200 yards and just generally playing around (which is incidentally why I bought this rifle). It has proved to be a lot of fun but I want to take the time to try to test s few loads and see what its potential is.

So what powders have you Savage 338 Lapoopa shooters had success with and if you would like to share some specific information on your specific loads and velocities / results that would be great. I have been told to try H1000 and 7828.

I generally have been shooting 250 and 300GR SMK's and I have a good stock of 250GR Lapua Scenars that I plan on loading. I use all Lapua brass and am up to around 220 pieces of that precious metal....$$$$$$$.

Thanks in advance.

I have been using Hogdon Retumbo with the 300gr. SMK's in my 110 FCP-HS.

Retumbo with 300gr Scenars are what we load in a buddy's rifle, but I don't recall the exact charge off the top of my head. It's a pretty hot charge @ 2890fps, but is very consistent out to a mile. If I remember right COL is 3.72" and 93 or 94 grains of Retumbo with single digit ES. I'll have to ask him the exact load. His is a custom gun not a Savage, but we have shot blackbuck, antelope, and whitetail out past a 1000yds with this load as well as steel out to a mile.

I asked the same question about 2 years ago.

I was told "Retumbo" would be my best friend, and it is!

H1000 ran a close second.

I am shooting 300grn Scenars.
