Fitting a new wood stock to an axis 223, what would be an easy magazine to use instead of the original?

It's because no one knows. There's been discussion around, but as far as I know no one has come up with a practical alternative to the original mag so far.

Comon AR-15 mags like the new Mossburg .223 uses would be cool. Trick would be to get them to work properly in your new stock. rj

You know it is not that hard to fit the original mag ? You need a washer for the front and a small piece of aluminium angle for the back. This is the way I did my Axis stock when I was making them

There are multiple places to get your 308 Axis/Edge magazines. Finding them in stock is the tricky part.

Has to do with the shape/design of the mag and the shape of the savage bolts and actions. Many have tried. Simply does not work.

most bolt faces are round
most mags hold the top cartridge with head of case partially exsposed
seems like if you positioned the mag properly
in relationship to the bolt face line of travel
it would slide a round off the top
regardless of mag or bolt manufacturer
the trick is positioning the mag properly
may take a few attemps to find the sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet spot
if memory serves, another member here has used a mauser mag on his axis -
I beleive it was a mauser mag -may have been other make
regardless it wasnt a savage mag & it worked

If you could live with a blind mag set up then just remove the bottom off of the existing mag. You are essentially left with a center feed blind mag.

As the link Thome posted shows, AR magazines won't work with the Savage. Mossberg's uses a bolt head similar to the Savage design, but for the MVP they created a uniquely different bolt-head to make it work with AR mag's. And since the Mossberg actions are slightly scaled down from the dimensions of a Savage, no parts are interchangeable.

The "trap door" (for lack of a better name) is narrow enough to fit between the AR magazine feed lips so it can peel off the top round with ease.

No I have not. I was thinking more along the lines of the magazine body itself.
