View Full Version : Modifying 223 magazine to accept longer bullets

has anyone tried moding the 223 mag to accept the 75gr amax hand loads. they can be up to oal 2.5in long. mag only allows 2.4ish and the bullet is to deep in the case at 2.4in oal

You can drill out the rivets in the magazine body, and drop out the spacer. Grind the spacer down to match the extra distance you are needing. Redrill the holes and install new rivets. It is a pretty simple change. But above all else... GO SLOW!!!!!

can you use a 243 mag and just bend the feed lips to hold the 223 cases?

The problem that you will face, is the magazine body width. The 243/308 magazine body is too wide to correctly position the 204/223 casings. You will need to add some form of spacer, to fill the voids on the sides of the casings, so the rounds will stagger correctly. This will be the only way to get the rounds to transition into the centerfeed portion of the top of the magazine.
