I have what I think is a Savage model 1903 factory engraved .22 pump clip fed with octagon barrel. The front sight is missing something but I don't know what to look for as a replacement part. The serial # is 1006xx. I cant post pictures but was hoping that someone could head me in the right direction for a reference. Thanks

Can you email pictures? I'd like to see if the engraving is legit.

I've got a 1903 here with a serial number of 40, one of the earliest I've seen, only 39 of them could be any earlier, Arthur himself might have held mine.

What exactly is the front sight missing, can you describe what you have on it now as it sits?

Hello,I can email you pictures if you give me your email address. The engraving is 2 hunting dogs at point scenes. One short haired retriever on the right side of the receiver and one long haired retriever on the left side. Both are facing towards the shooting end of the rifle. It's hard to explain the front sight but pictures will show it. Thanks

Hey DR, I'll pm you my email address, really interested to see the pics as Savage didn't start to use the pointers till the early 50's.

Someone please post the photos. I would love to see the gun. I ended up buying this rifle. It has been re-barreled at some point but it appears factory done. Here it is with a couple other 1903's -

The 1903's were made from 1903 through 1916, with another 1,000 being made in 1922.

Why can't any of those kinda guns show up in Canada anyways?

All I keep finding up here are 1895's!

I am interested in any new or further info on this "bird dog" 1903.
I have acquired one and I have found two others.
Any word on production figures or real value?
Thanks

I don't think it's possible to find production numbers on these, the only surviving records I know of are the warehouse ledgers which often do not have much more than the day it got there, the day it was shipped, and often to where it was shipped - some records will have notes if it were a higher grade or special order but not always.

I find the Gold Medal Grade ('bird dog') the most common of all catalogs higher grades, even being more common than the English Pattern which was just a shotgun style butt with a hard rubber butt plate.
