I have a can of wheelers cerama coat on the way that I am going to use to coat an action only and am just wondering how I am going to protect all the threads on the action from getting coated. For the scope mount and stock threads I am just going to use spare screws from my box o parts. I can't think of a good way to protect the threads in the action where the barrel screws in. My only thought would be a old barrel if I had one. Any ideas?

I just cover it with masking tape then place it on a flat surface and trim around it with a razor.

Stuff it with toilet paper and tape the ends. When I paint the action I just cram TP into the front and rear area of the action.

Interesting, cerama coat requires baking for an hour at 350 so I'd have to carefully remove the top and tape before baking.

Kiwi shoe polish or Johnson's Paste Wax on the threads works pretty well. :p

The coating will be dry before you bake it.

I have never painted a rifle but I have painted a whole lotta cars and this is the answer IMO.
Put good time into prep: Cleaning, roughing and taping. Your finished product will show!

I forgot to order a can of Tiptons instaclean, which is the product wheeler recommends for degreasing. I don't want to pay another $10 shipping charge for just one item. What else would work the wouldn't leave a residue?

Spray can of carb cleaner.

I wouldn't use carb cleaner. some leave a petrolium residue behind. brake clean or even better acetone would be my vote

Gun scrubber works good too and can be found at your local walmart.
