I have an older bolt with the head for a 7mm Rem Mag and it has the larger hole / firing pin.

If I want to change to a .473" or smaller bolt head do I have to update the bolt with a new firing pin too? If so, what all do I need to order and how do I do it?

I you want to change everything You'll need a .095" firing pin, bolt head and bolthead retaining pin. Your old bolt body /bolthead may be "keyed", the newer bolthead will not have the keyway ( notch ) in the shaft. Use a Demel or file to remove it. Also, make sure you order the .473" bolt head for a long action.

The simple way, remove the key and drill out the new bolthead shaft using a #26 ( .147") bit to the vent. All you'll need then is the LA bolthead.

Thanks for the advice. I'll order the parts and give it a try.

Midway lists 3 different firing pins..

1. Savage Arms Firing Pin 30-06 Springfield, Standard Magnum Model 110, 111
Product #: 115418

2. Savage Arms Firing Pin Assembly Long/Short Action M112 223 Remington, 308 Winchester Blue
Product #: 141681

3. Savage Arms Firing Pin Assembly Long Action M112 7mm STW, 30-06 Springfield, 300 Winchester Magnum Blue
Product #: 630992

I think I need #2. Is this correct?

I don't know what they're say'n, "Long/Short Action" ???. The only exception would be if you have a early action is what is referred to the "J" at times with the 4.522" action screw spacing.

Other than the diameters, .095" and .145", a long action pin is a long action pin. . AFAIK, all actions with a 5.062" screw spacing are the same length.

For some reason I can't get on their site at the moment to check, but #1, 115418 would be right as long as its the .095" pin.
