Well I was recently thinking of purchasing a new stock for my 111. Unfortunately I found out my dog needs surgery and it is gonna cost around $1600-$1800. Buying a new stock is not in the budget now. I made an adjustable cheek rest out of some lexan I had kicking around to start. My question for all you savage lovers and tinkerers is how do I go about stiffening up the forearm?

I'm assuming you heated it and bent/fitted it to the stock? What heat source do you need for lexan (or kydex)??

I stuck it in the oven for 3 minutes at 300 deg. I have had it out to the range, was -7 no issues with cracking or anything for that matter. what would you guys use to stiffen up the forearm? I have read it is hard to find an epoxy that will stick to the stock.

I cannot say for certain that it'll work on the savage stock, but I stiffened a Ruger stock with marine epoxy and some lead shot added in for a little more weight (it was a bad kicker). I wish I had pics, but I don't.

How stiff do you want it? Benchrest stiff?

not benchrest stiff but better than what it is. It has quite a bit of flex when shooting off a bipod. I would like to stiffen it up and open up the barrel channel. I can easily touch the stock forearm to the barrel with very little force.

Obviously your on a tight budget right now. If you want a stiff stock for little money (under $100) check the Boyd website. thier laminate stocks are plenty stiff as are all laminates but a little heavyier than the tupperware stock you have.

I considered this but with shipping to Canada and duty ++, it is not worth it.

Use a dremel and remove the webs in the center of the bottom of the barrel channel. This should leave you with a channel about 3/8" wide. Get a piece of 3/8"x3/8" key stock from the hardware store and epoxy it in the channel with JB Weld. Works pretty well to stiffen up the fore end. You will still experience some flex in the magazine well area, and you can take some of that out by using the JB Weld to attach aluminum or steel strap to the side surfaces of the mag well if you're using a single shot follower.
