Went out to shoot yesterday for the first time with my Stevens 200 XP. Weapon came with a Bushnell 3-9X40 already mounted and bore sighted. After a 5 round slow fire with clp covered patches between rounds I began to try the two types of ammo I had on hand. I had WWB 147gr and American Eagle (for M1A use) in 168gr. My rifle didn't like the WWB and it shot consistantly 1.25MOA at 100 with 3 round groups. When shifting the the American Eagle I shot 1MOA as you can see below. I can't wait to get some match grade ammo and see what it can do with it.

All shots were taken in the prone with a backpack as front support. I'm hoping when my bipod arrives it will help me tighten my groups along with better ammo.

Trigger was a bit heavy but I'm used to assult rifles with a heavy trigger so it didn't effect me too much.

What scope was on the rifle when you got it, the factory supplied Simmons? If so, not the best. An aftermarket trigger would be a good bet. The SavageShootersSupply trigger is the best for under $100. Plus, check to be sure your barrel is free floated. Other than that, not too bad for factory ammo.

Give her about 100 rds of GMM 168gr. and I bet your groups will tighten up nicely.

Very nice. My 200 shot very accurate 168 A-Max groups out of the box (over H4895).

Not sure what the deal was, but when I put a bipod on my groups opened up significantly. Maybe there's a trick to shooting with one that I don't know, but it has since made its way to another toy.

Happy shooting!

With the factory stevens stock a bipod can and often times will make the stock contact the barrel in random places, therefore throwing off your harmonics and making your groups iinconsistent. Also can change depending on what surface the pod is on, grass, concrete, bench, etc. May be remedied if you opened up your barrel channel a good bit so it's less likely to hit the barrel when shooting, but that's a toss up as to whether it will work or not. Have fun, imho the best $250-$300 you can spend these days:)

It came with a bushnell 3-9x40. 1/4mil adjustments with closed caps. And yes I want to try both GMM and Hornady in it I just can't force myself to lay down the $44.00 for a box of GMM at a local gun store and it's the only place I can find it. I am going to a long range shoot this coming sunday. I have a 20MOA base on order that will help with my 600 and 1000 range shots. I'll let ya know how she does.

AS treehuggermugger said, try 168 gr. bullets, they seem the most accurate in Savage-Stevens rifles. Thats a good scope you got on that rifle, definately not Savage supplied. And yes, bipods on the flimsier Savage-Stevens stocks is not a good idea without opeing up the barrel channel considerably. If you are serious abut that rifle Sgt. you should look for a better stock and trigger.

It's going to get a B&C Medalist once the funds allow it. I'm leaning toward the green with black spiderweb.
