Does savage still make a long action with a large shank? If not, how long has it been since they have? Is the large shank action the same as the small with the threads just opened up or actually a different action?

116 Alaskan in 338 Win Mag and I think the 116 Bear Hunter are both LA large shank.....not sure about the 110 BA in 338 Lapua Mag. There may be others as well.

I believe that both of those are small shank/long action. The 110 BA is a large shank, but you have to buy one if you want the action. I would just buy a Stiller Tac 338 before buying a 110 BA for just the action and chassis.

I believe that Savage's 375 Ruger rifles use a large shank long action.

@palerider338 are you 100% positive? If so I think I will buy one for the action. Most of the older 116's I have found in RUM's are about the same price as a new Alaskan.

Had the step by the nut....must be a large shank. I liked the gun even though it was reeeally light for the caliber. Would have been a flamethrower with the 18 inch barrel......something akin to an F-16 with the afterburner lit.

I think I am going to order one to build either a 300 RUM or 338 Edge on. I haven't decided which, I like the idea of shooting the 230gr Bergers out of the 300RUM at around 2950FPS is pretty appealing for a mile gun.

Not sure about the 338 model as I haven't seen one in person. But I have a 116FCSS in 375 Ruger and it definitely is a large shank action. I called Savage and got confirmation from them before ordering it but didn't ask about the 338. I find it hard to believe that the 338's are as they've never made any other ones on the large shank that I'm aware of (I'm talking 338 win mag, not Lapua). But since the 375 Ruger is a large shank action, they may be just using the same action to build both models.
Here's my 375.

That's what the 338 Win Mag I had looked like.......large shank. The 116 Alaskan only came in 338 Win Mag & 375 Ruger and if memory serves me correctly 300 Win Mag. Just checked the Savage site. Now it's only 308 & 375 Ruger. Looks like they dropped the 338 Win mag in that model this year.
The current 16/116 Bearhunter comes in LA & SA and various calibers including 338 Win Mag. You would have to phone Savage to check if they are small or large shanks OR find a 116 Alaskan that was built before this model year.

He's going to build a RUM or Edge with it so he doesn't have to get a 338. He could just get one of the 375's since they're large shank. Thanks palerider for clearing up the 338. Like I said I never saw one of the Alaskan Brush Hunters in 338 in person so didn't know for sure. I have seen the Bear Hunters though and can tell you that unless they've changed, the belted mags are small shanks and the WSM's are Large as well as the 375 models. I bought the 116 FCSS because I wanted the DBM and didn't want to have to track down all the bottom metal parts to convert the blind mag. It's weird that they dropped the 338 from the Brush hunter as popular as 338's are. Guess it didn't sell well. I have two 338's and love 'em.
