If someone started making high BC bullets in 257 and 277, do you think there's a market, I seem to think so.

There are some pretty good options in high BC bullets for 257 and 277 now, much better than 10 years ago! Berger has several as does nosler, Sierra, hornady and a few high dollar semi-custom bullets makers out there

The Berger 115 works great but I would love to see a 125.

I assume you are talking about .257" in 125gr? That would indeed be a nice addition to the lineup. I wonder if the limited selection of heavy for caliber bullets is due to the standard twist rate for a .257" being 1:10" which wouldn't be too good for the heavier bullets??

Just a thought...

Yes, the twist needed to stabilize a streamlined 125 grain bullet in .257 would be tighter than 1-10 inches.

Tighter twist barrels are made (see, e. g., http://www.pac-nor.com/barrels/), but in not many factory rifles. The availability of stock barrels in tighter twists implies that some heavy bullets exist and that some people shoot them. We need a modern Jack O'Connor to pick up the banner and demonstrate why a .25 caliber cartridge with heavy bullets is enough better than 6.5's, 270's, 7mms, and .30 calibers to switch over.

I would like to see that too and I have done my part. I wrote an article for the Varmint Hunter a little over a year ago about my hunting success with the little .250 Savage and 115 grain Bergers. I went long on a 112" Coues deer at 662 yards and it worked great that deer didnt know what hit him.

Ya mean like these'ns?

L-R 270-08, 270-08 Imp and the 270 Win. for comparison.

BTW, this is my original load workup for the improved version.

The duplicate bars (44-45) were due to different lots of powder.

Where does the 270 WSM fit in that picture?

The question should be why not a 257 Creedmoor or 277 Creedmoor? ;) Though the 250 Savage and 257 Creedmoor are pretty darn close.

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the .25 calibers, hence my screen name. I would love to have a win mag case like 7mm, 300, or 338 necked down to a .257 caliber bullet. It's a lot of powder for such a small bullet, but it sure would be a little zipper.

quarterbore, have you ever considered a 25cal bullet in a WSM?

I am awaiting a 6mm WSM barrel now, and it should be a screamer. A 25cal on a WSM case would be one fast 257. Just a thought.

Wasn't there a 25WSSM at one point?

Yea but it was basically just a short action 25-06. A 257 weatherby magnum is another story.

FYI a 257 Weatherby is exactly that a 300WinMag necked down to 257, 70gr Blitz Kings @ 4500FPS It's love at first flight.

Looks like a 257 Weatherby is going onto my want list.

Not now but in time maybe. Very few barrels are twisted right. Most chambers aren't throated right. A bullet co. isn't going to tool up to make something nobody can use and gun companies aren't going to build guns for bullets nobody's making.

I agree with JA though, Berger is pushing the envelope with .25's, in time maybe the other components of the system upgrade to match and incrementally the quarterbore may start to become a more viable long range/competition option. .277 probably has less of a chance because it's sandwiched in between the two giants, 7mm and 30 and since they're already in the higher recoil range (relative to competition shooting) there's not as much need to split hairs like there is with the smaller calibers.

I shot 500 yards last week at a 12"x12" steel plate, and was zeroed in at 100 yards, I only had to add 4 clicks to the scope, to compensate for bullet drop, Chesty for president was spotting for me he almost soiled himself, one guy asked me to go back and forth on the clicks so he could see for himself, he walked away shaking his head and never said a word, I love it, it makes my trip to the range meaningful, hey any load that you have more powder weight than bullet weight, is bound to be an awesome round, to duplicate this load it goes as follows,
70gr Sierra Blitz King loaded up with 75gr of RL17, I had absolutely no signs of pressure not even a hint, Chesty saw me lift the bolt and even inspected the brass, and said WoW you can even go hotter, I said I usually run a full case but since I am far from home, I toned it down a little,
he then proceeded to call me a derogatory term, Remember now duplicate at your own risk.

Yup exactly like that. Figured it had already been done, just hadn't seen it yet. Good Link.

Wasn't there a 25WSSM at one point?

Sure was. Like was said above, it gave 25-06 type performance in a shorter and fatter package.

PS: you gotta admit there's something to, a little extra free bore.
