I just bought a model 11 and I am loving it. My little brother is looking to get a smaller caliber bolt action. With all the parts you can buy here on this website especially stock parts that people scratch can I build cheaper than buying new? Or is it best to just buy a completed rifle. I don't need anything better than anything just as basic as can be. Is this something that is achievable?

Especially used parts that I don't mind being used.

But with tool prices will that not be worth it to do it that way? I'm looking to upgrade my gun in the future so I may need them anyway.

If you're building you still need a receiver and I haven't seen many of them sold on here. You can usually find a good deal on used guns and then customize it to your liking. On my recent build I started off with a 30-06 model 110 that I bought a few weeks ago for $221.75 at a pawn shop...hard to beat that price ;)

True but also takes some luck. Yeah I noticed that about receivers.

It cost a lot more to build a gun that is custom by you. If you just want to hunt plink with some range time thrown in, buy it used or new. If you have a gun in mind they don't offer, build it.

Way more satisfaction in building your own tho. Even if its all factory parts.

You can certainly build a rifle cheaper than this, but here's my current build for reference.

Savage 11 in 7mm-08 because I couldn't find an action $435 + shipping + ffl transfer

Barrel - $300

Trigger $85 - wouldn't be needed with an accutrigger

Stock - $100-$700 depending on use

Tools - Action wrench/Barrel nut wrench/headspace gages/ $130

It definitely costs more but you get what you want instead of what someone thinks will sell.

That's exactly what I'm saying. How much more expensive would it be building with all factory parts? Even with some being used or snagging good deals on here.

A couple hundred bucks more. It would be cheapest to buy a used one in the caliber you want.

Yeah I'm seeing that. Receivers aren't easy to come by. Or even a used one in the action I want then swap barrels sell and buy right here.

It took 2 months for me to find the model 11 with a 308 bolt face for the price I paid. Could've got one right away for a hundred more. I wanted left hand so it would've taken a month longer than my search to buy new in the caliber I wanted.

I took the rifle to the range the other day and even in its highly used condition with tupperware stock it shot pretty well. Certainly eastern US hunting accuracy good.
