Hello all?

I found this forum while looking for some info on an old Savage 12 guage semi auto shotgun and it looks like it may be the right place for my questions.

I dint see any threads or sticky about model identification so I hope I am not asking something that has been covered a hundred times.

I have come into possession of a shotgun which I thought was a Savage 745B , but now believe may be a 720. I have looked online and find a lot of contradicting information. The gun is 12 gauge semi auto with engraving of a pheasant and brush on either side of it. The barrel is marked proof tested and the receiver also says "Three shot" on it.

Thanks
Chris

I think your first guess was right because a model 720 would have "model 720" stamped on the left hand side of the barrel.

Could be a 745 but check out the 750's and 775's as well.

Is it a rounded back (i.e 870) or a hump back (i.e. Browning A-5)?

If it's a hump back then it could be a 720 Standard, 726 Upland Sporter (2-shell magazine), 740C (Cutts Compensator), or 745 Lightweight (alloy receiver).

If it's a rounded back then it could be a 755 Standard, 755SC (Savage Super Choke), 775 Lightweight (alloy receiver), 775SC (Savage Super Choke), 750 Standard, 750SC (Savage Super Choke), or 750AC (poly choke).

Hello MrFurious,

I should have mentioned in my original post that it was a hump back. I had a picture to attach, but realized I couldn't and left out that detail. It also says made in Utica NY if that makes any difference.

Its the "three shot" that has been elusive to me, but you have me thinking with the 726. The guy I bought it from mentioned it only held 3 rounds and that was with one in the chamber.

I love the look and feel of the gun. The metal is in great shape but the butt plate was broken and the stock has become rounded. Any idea what the closest butt plate would be for that model. I purchased one for a 745, but it is too long. I plan to cut the stock down by 1/8 inch to eliminate the rounding and put a new butt plate on. If the plate s a bit bigger I can sand it down in place. Does that sound like a reasonable method of repair?

Thanks
Chris
